About LeBlond

USAEst. 1887

Richard Knight LeBlond founded the R. K. LeBlond Machine Tool Company in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1887 with a singular focus on manufacturing metal cutting lathes. The company grew steadily through the early twentieth century and played a significant role supplying machine tools during World War II. In 1981 a joint venture with Makino Milling Machine created LeBlond Makino Machine Tool Company, which later became simply Makino in 1996. The following year, LeBlond Lathe Parts was established to carry on service and support for all LeBlond lathe equipment built since 1887, and in 1998 the company reorganized as LeBlond Ltd to reflect its broader machine tool mission.

LeBlond's flagship product line is its engine lathe range, anchored by two iconic series. The Regal, introduced in 1931, became the workhorse of American machine shops and is identifiable by its four-lever gearhead control; it was offered in swing sizes ranging from roughly 14 inches up through large-gap-bed configurations exceeding 30 inches. The Servo Shift series, produced prominently during the LeBlond Makino era, replaced the multi-lever control with a two-lever layout and a speed-selector dial for faster spindle changes, and is commonly found in 15-inch, 17-inch, 19-inch, and larger swing sizes with bed lengths from 30 inches to over 100 inches. Both series feature hardened and ground bed ways, quick-change gearboxes, inch and metric threading, and robust cast-iron construction.

LeBlond engine lathes have served a wide cross-section of metalworking industries. Aerospace and defense manufacturers relied on them for turning shafts, housings, and structural components to tight tolerances. Automotive production and repair facilities used them for drivetrain and engine work, while oil and gas operations depended on the heavy-duty variants for large-diameter pipe and valve components. General job shops, toolrooms, and vocational training programs across the United States also made LeBlond lathes a standard fixture on the shop floor.

Buyers seeking used LeBlond engine lathes are drawn first to the brand's legendary build quality: heavy cast-iron beds, precision-ground ways, and robust headstock gearing that hold up through decades of continuous production use. Parts availability is a major advantage, as LeBlond Ltd maintains a large OEM parts inventory and supports machines built as far back as the World War II era, making long-term maintenance straightforward. The combination of proven mechanical simplicity, wide swing and center-distance options, and strong resale value makes used LeBlond Regal and Servo Shift lathes a practical, cost-effective choice for shops that need reliable turning capacity without the overhead of new equipment.
