Power shears (also called plate shears or guillotine shears) use a straight blade to cut sheet metal and plate to length. Hydraulic shears dominate the market for their smooth cutting action, adjustable stroke speed, and programmable back gauge systems. Capacities range from light gauge sheet metal to 1-inch plate in lengths up to 20 feet or more.
Key specifications include cutting capacity (thickness × length), rake angle, blade gap adjustment, hold-down system, and back gauge configuration. CNC back gauges enable precise cut-to-length operations with minimal operator setup. Swing beam shears offer advantages for thinner materials, while guillotine-style shears handle heavier plate.
