About NRM
NRM, short for National Rubber Machinery, was founded in 1907 in Akron, Ohio, initially as a pioneer in tire production equipment for the automotive industry. By the mid-twentieth century the company had pivoted and expanded into plastics and rubber extrusion machinery, becoming one of the first American manufacturers to offer a dedicated line of single screw extruders for the plastics processing industry. Davis-Standard acquired NRM in 1994, retiring the brand, though vast numbers of NRM machines remain in active service today.
The heart of the NRM product line was the Pacemaker series of single screw extruders, which evolved through successive generations including the Pacemaker III and Pacemaker IV. These machines were built in screw diameters ranging from 2.5 inches up to 6 inches and beyond, with L/D ratios commonly spanning 24:1 to 34:1 to suit a wide range of thermoplastic resins and throughput requirements. NRM also produced the Profilemaster series for profile extrusion applications, as well as cold-feed rubber extruders under the NRM Extrusion brand that Davis-Standard continued to market after the acquisition.
NRM single screw extruders served a broad cross-section of industries, including automotive parts and weatherstripping, wire and cable insulation, plastic pipe and tubing, film and sheet production, and plastic recycling and pelletizing operations. The machines were equally at home processing commodity resins such as polyethylene and polypropylene as they were handling engineering-grade and elastomeric compounds, making them versatile assets across manufacturing and industrial sectors.
Buyers seeking used NRM extruders consistently cite the brand's heavy-duty fabricated steel construction, robust gearbox-driven drive trains, and long-life barrel and screw assemblies as reasons these machines outlast lighter-built alternatives by decades. Parts and rebuild services remain widely available through third-party specialists, keeping maintenance costs manageable. The combination of proven mechanical simplicity, a large installed base, and strong resale value makes used NRM single screw extruders an attractive choice for processors looking to add reliable extrusion capacity without the capital outlay of new equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is NRM known for?
NRM (National Rubber Machinery) is best known for its Pacemaker series of single screw extruders, which became a standard piece of equipment in American plastics processing plants from the 1960s through the 1990s. Founded in 1907 in Akron, Ohio, NRM was one of the earliest U.S. manufacturers to develop dedicated plastic extrusion machinery, and its machines are still widely used today despite the brand being retired after Davis-Standard acquired it in 1994.
Are replacement parts still available for used NRM extruders?
Yes, a robust aftermarket ecosystem supports used NRM extruders, with numerous independent specialists offering screw and barrel rebuilds, gearbox repairs, and replacement components. Because NRM built its machines to consistent, well-documented specifications over many decades, sourcing parts or refurbishment services is generally straightforward compared to more obscure legacy brands.
What screw sizes and L/D ratios are common on NRM single screw extruders?
NRM single screw extruders were produced in a range of screw diameters from 2.5 inches up to 6 inches and larger, with L/D ratios typically between 24:1 and 34:1 depending on the model and configuration. The 4.5-inch Pacemaker III, for example, was offered in both vented and non-vented barrel configurations and was designed for high-pressure operations, making it suitable for a wide variety of thermoplastic resins.
