Samsung machine tools began in 1988 as the machine tools division of Samsung Heavy Industries, branded Samsung Machine Tools. The corporate path since then is worth understanding, because it determines where support for a used machine actually comes from. The machine tool business was later moved under Samsung Aerospace Industries, which became Samsung Techwin, and in 1999 it was spun out as an independent company: SMEC Co., Ltd. Technology partnerships with OKK, Mori Seiki, and Toshiba deepened its engineering through the 1990s, with the Toshiba relationship specifically covering five-face processing center technology. SMEC merged with E-Woon Information & Communication in 2011 to form its present corporate structure, and in 2025 acquired the machine tool business of Hyundai WIA - bringing two of the largest Korean machine tool lines under one roof. Production runs at Gimhae in Gyeongsangnam-do and Daegu in Gyeongsangbuk-do, with export coverage aimed at more than 60 countries. Machines carry either the Samsung or SMEC badge depending on vintage and market, and both refer to the same lineage.

The product range centers on vertical machining centers, tapping centers, and turning centers. MCV and LCV series vertical machining centers span a wide range of table sizes, with X-axis travels running from around 500 mm up to 6,200 mm on the largest machines. The PCV series covers higher-speed linear-guide designs for precision work. The SM 400DH is a dual-spindle vertical tapping center: two independently controlled 12,000 RPM spindles spaced 11.8 inches apart, dual 20-station automatic tool changers, and BT30 tooling, running a Fanuc 0i-MF control. Because the spindles are independently controlled rather than ganged, the machine can run two identical parts simultaneously or two different operations, which roughly doubles throughput on small high-volume components - fasteners, connector bodies, brackets, small housings. A four-spindle sibling, the SM 400DDH, extends the same concept. This class of machine competes directly with Brother, Fanuc Robodrill, and Doosan tapping centers, and typically sells used at a meaningful discount to those brands despite comparable capability.

SMEC America Corp provides factory support to the U.S., Mexico, and Canada through a distributor network that includes dealers across Texas, Kansas, Missouri, Alabama, and New York, and publishes machine catalogs, electrical diagrams, layout drawings, and spindle power and torque charts by model - unusually good documentation access for buying used. The company has also diversified into semiconductor process equipment, supplying wafer polishing systems to Samsung Electronics, which speaks to corporate durability behind the parts channel.

Two points of confusion are worth clearing up. These machines have no connection to Samsung Electronics, the consumer electronics company, despite the shared name and the Samsung Group origin. And model numbers beginning with SM refer to the tapping center line here, not to Samsung Electronics device codes. When identifying a used machine, confirm the badge (Samsung or SMEC), the model, and the Fanuc control generation, since SMEC publishes documentation by specific model revision.
