When should I choose an HMC over a VMC?
Choose an HMC when you need high-volume production with pallet changers, excellent chip evacuation (especially for deep cavities), 4-axis tombstone work with multiple parts per setup, or lights-out manufacturing capability. HMCs cost more but offer superior productivity for the right applications.
What are the advantages of horizontal machining centers?
HMCs offer better chip evacuation (gravity helps), higher spindle utilization with pallet changers, ability to machine multiple sides in one setup using tombstones, better surface finish on deep pockets, and are ideal for automation and lights-out production.
Are used HMCs a good value?
Yes, used HMCs can be excellent value. They're less common than VMCs in the secondary market, but well-maintained machines from Mazak, Okuma, and Makino provide years of productive service. The higher new cost means significant savings buying used.
