About Jet

United StatesEst. 1958

Jet Equipment was founded in 1958 by Leslie P. Sussman, who named the company after his first Boeing jet flight from Seattle to Japan and began by importing manual chain hoists and trolleys through a hardware store in Tacoma, Washington. By the early 1980s metalworking machinery had become the core of the business, and in the 1990s Jet moved from pure importing to designing and manufacturing its own products to tighter specifications. Today Jet operates as a flagship brand within JPW Industries, which also owns Powermatic and Wilton, with headquarters in La Vergne, Tennessee, and manufacturing operations in Asia.

Jet's metalworking lathe lineup is the product line most sought after on the used market and spans a wide range of configurations and capacities. The GHB Series geared head bench lathes feature enclosed gearboxes, hardened and ground spindles, and precision roller bearings for tight tolerances. The GH Series gear head engine lathes scale up to larger swing and center distances, while the ZX Series large spindle bore lathes are built for heavy-duty turning with one-piece cast iron bases and universal gearboxes that handle inch, metric, diametrical, and module pitch threads without change gears. Electronic variable speed models round out the lineup for shops that need stepless speed control.

Jet metalworking lathes serve a broad cross-section of industries including general metal fabrication, job shop machining, automotive repair and restoration, maintenance and repair operations, tool and die making, and educational and vocational training programs. The machines are sized and priced to fit small independent shops as well as larger production environments, making them one of the most widely distributed lathe brands in North America.

Buyers actively seek used Jet engine lathes because the cast iron construction, hardened bedways, and enclosed gearboxes hold up well over years of continuous use, leaving a healthy supply of machines that still hold tight tolerances after reconditioning. Parts availability is strong thanks to Jet's long-standing dealer network and JPW Industries' ongoing support infrastructure. The combination of proven build quality, a recognizable brand, and accessible price points on the secondary market makes used Jet lathes a practical choice for shops looking to add turning capacity without the lead time or cost of new equipment.
