About Hurco
Hurco was founded in October 1968 by Gerald Roch and Edward Humston in Indianapolis, Indiana β the name itself a contraction of their surnames and the word "company." From its earliest days the business focused on making CNC technology more accessible to working machinists, introducing one of the industry's first integrated CNC milling controls at IMTS in 1974. Over the following decades Hurco grew into a publicly traded global manufacturer (NASDAQ: HURC) with production facilities in Taiwan and China and sales and service operations across North America, Europe, and Asia.
The flagship product line is the VMX Series of 3-axis vertical machining centers, which Hurco describes as its signature line and which spans table travels from 24Γ20 inches up to 84Γ34 inches. Standard VMX machines use a dual-wound 12K Big Plus 40-taper spindle, while the VMXDi variants feature a 15,000 RPM inline direct-drive spindle for improved surface finish and thermal stability. The more compact VM Series offers powerful 3-axis machining in a smaller footprint with a cast-iron frame and one-piece base, making it a popular entry point for growing shops. All current i-series machines run the WinMax control with UltiMotion technology, which optimizes motion paths and can meaningfully reduce cycle times compared to conventional CNC motion control.
Hurco's end markets center on independent job shops, tool-and-die makers, mold manufacturers, and short-run production departments inside larger corporations. Key industries served include aerospace, defense, medical device manufacturing, automotive, energy, and transportation β sectors that demand tight tolerances, frequent part changeovers, and reliable uptime. The WinMax control's ability to switch seamlessly between conversational programming and standard G-code makes Hurco vertical machining centers especially well suited to high-mix, low-volume work environments.
Used Hurco vertical machining centers attract strong buyer interest for several reasons. The machines are built around heavy, ribbed fine-grain cast-iron frames with wedge-locked roller ways, giving them the structural rigidity needed to hold accuracy over years of production use. The WinMax control platform has been continuously updated, meaning older machines can often be brought current with software, and Hurco's global service network supports parts availability for a wide range of model years. Shops seeking a used Hurco VMX42, VMX24, or similar vertical machining center consistently find that the combination of robust construction, an intuitive control, and strong resale demand makes these machines a sound investment on the secondary market.
