The modern company was formed in 1993 by merging several state machine tool plants, listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 1996, and by the early 2010s was ranked among the largest machine tool manufacturers in the world by volume. SMTCL entered the North American market in 2011 through a U.S. subsidiary based in City of Industry, California, and sold through regional dealers.

The product range is broad: flat-bed and slant-bed CNC lathes, CNC turning centers, vertical machining centers (the VMC series, from the VMC 650 up through the VMC 1600), horizontal machining centers, gantry and bridge mills, horizontal boring mills, and conventional engine lathes and mills. The machines sold in North America were typically fitted with Fanuc controls (0i-MD on vertical machining centers, 0i-TD on lathes) along with imported spindles, tool changers and linear guides.

When buying a used SMTCL machine, focus on the components that matter most: the control, the spindle and the tool changer. Because the Fanuc package (control, drives and motors) is the same one found on Japanese and Taiwanese machines, service and parts for it are readily available from Fanuc America and independent shops. Check the ATC for smooth operation, listen to the spindle at speed, and confirm the way covers and lube system are in good order. Ask for hours if the control keeps them, and check the nameplate on the column for the true build date.

Factory support for SMTCL in the U.S. has been less consistent than for the major brands, so most owners rely on Fanuc for control issues and on independent CNC service technicians for mechanical work. Common wear items such as bearings, belts and way wipers are standard sizes. Mechanical parts specific to the machine can be sourced through the U.S. distributor network or directly from Shenyang, though lead times can be longer.
