About Mori Seiki
Mori Seiki was founded in 1948 by the Mori brothers in Japan, initially producing textile machinery before pivoting to machine tool manufacturing in 1958. By 1968 the company had begun producing numerical control lathes, establishing itself as a technology leader in precision metalworking. Decades of aggressive research and development resulted in more than 200 standard-setting machine models. In 2013, following a strategic alliance with Germany's Gildemeister AG that began around 2009, the company was renamed DMG Mori, though the Mori Seiki brand name remains widely used to identify equipment produced before and during that transition.
Mori Seiki built its reputation on a broad lineup of CNC vertical machining centers, horizontal machining centers, and turning centers. Among vertical machining centers, the MV series represented early CNC VMC production, while the SV series, NV series, and the Duracenter line became flagship products for 3-axis and 5-axis vertical milling. The Duracenter 5, for example, features a 12,000 RPM spindle, CAT-40 taper, and Mori Seiki's proprietary MSX-501 MAPPS control. The NV series continued that evolution with high-speed spindles and die-and-mold specifications, and the NMV series extended the platform to full 5-axis simultaneous contouring with optional pallet changers.
Mori Seiki vertical machining centers serve a wide range of end markets. Aerospace suppliers rely on them for tight-tolerance aluminum and titanium structural components. Automotive Tier 1 manufacturers use them for engine parts, housings, and transmission components. Medical device shops value the surface finish quality and repeatability for implants and surgical instruments. General job shops and mold makers also depend on Mori Seiki VMCs for their combination of rigidity, spindle performance, and flexible tooling capacity.
Used Mori Seiki vertical machining centers attract strong buyer demand for several reasons. The machines are built with heavy cast-iron structures and high-quality linear guides that maintain accuracy well into their second and third decades of service. Fanuc-based controls such as the MSX and MSC series are well understood by machinists and supported by a global parts network, keeping maintenance costs manageable. The brand's overlap with the DMG Mori global service organization means spare parts and technical support remain accessible long after original production. Strong resale values and competitive bidding at auction reflect the loyalty of experienced machinists who have run Mori Seiki equipment and actively seek it on the secondary market.
Vertical machining centers (VMCs) are the most popular CNC milling machines, featuring a vertically oriented spindle. VMCs are versatile, accessible, and ideal for 3-axis machining of prismatic parts, mold cavities, and general-purpose work. Their open design provides easy access for part loading and visual monitoring of operations.
