About Master Unit Die
The Master Unit Die concept was created by D-M-E Company, which traces its roots to 1942 when Ted Quarnstrom founded Detroit Mold Engineering in Michigan to supply standard mold bases to the plastics industry. DME introduced the Master Unit Die Quick-Change system roughly a half-century ago, establishing what became the industry benchmark for modular injection mold tooling. DME was acquired by Milacron in 1996 and today operates as part of the Hillenbrand family of companies, with world headquarters remaining in Madison Heights, Michigan.
The flagship product is the MUD Quick-Change system, which pairs a static master frame with an unlimited number of interchangeable companion insert molds. Four frame configurations address different production needs: the U Frame accepts both standard-style and T-style companion inserts for exceptional design flexibility; the H Frame features a center runner bar for simultaneous molding with two inserts, doubling output per cycle; the Double H Frame quadruples per-cycle quantities for high-volume runs; and the Adapter Frame converts existing standard mold bases into a quick-change solution. Insert molds are available in solid or laminated construction, including three- and four-plate designs, and can be machined for stripper plates, water lines, hydraulic cylinders, and other special applications.
