About Thermwood

USAEst. 1969

Thermwood Corporation was founded in 1969 in Dale, Indiana, initially as a plastic molder of wood-grained parts for the furniture industry. In the 1970s the company developed its own CNC machine tool control to automate the trimming of those plastic parts, began selling that equipment commercially, and in doing so created the CNC router as a product category. Today Thermwood operates from a 175,000-square-foot facility in Dale and is recognized as one of the oldest and most patent-rich CNC router companies in the world.

The core of Thermwood's lineup is its 3-axis and 5-axis CNC router range. The Model 42 is a moving-table, fixed-gantry 3-axis router available in single or dual-table configurations, designed for high-speed machining of hardwoods, softwoods, MDF, particleboard, plastics, and aluminum. The Model 53 is a moving-gantry, fixed-table 3-axis router built for routing and stack machining of large sheet materials, available in table sizes up to 5 feet by 20 feet with an optional roller hold-down system for dramatically increased throughput. Other notable 3-axis platforms include the Model 43, Model 45, Model 63, and the MTR Series, while the 5-axis lineup covers models such as the Model 65, Model 67, Model 70, Model 77, and Model 90 for trimming, patterns, and mold work. All machines run Thermwood's proprietary SuperControl, the only CNC router control designed and built in-house by a major router manufacturer.

Thermwood serves an exceptionally broad range of end markets. Its 3-axis routers are workhorses in woodworking, custom cabinetry, furniture manufacturing, architectural millwork, and plastic sheet fabrication. Its 5-axis platforms are standard equipment in aerospace interior production, composite fabrication, automotive tooling, marine and boat building, military and defense applications, and medical device manufacturing. The company's machines have processed commercial airliner interiors, helicopter blades, structural parts for military aircraft, and components for NASA programs.

Buyers seeking used Thermwood CNC routers are drawn first to the machines' exceptional structural longevity — heavy stress-relieved steel frames and precision ball-screw drives that routinely outlast multiple control generations. Because Thermwood designs and manufactures its own SuperControl, retrofit and upgrade paths remain available for older machines, keeping them productive well beyond typical equipment lifecycles. The brand's strong dealer network and active parts support infrastructure mean that sourcing replacement components for used Thermwood routers is straightforward compared with many competing brands, making pre-owned machines a cost-effective entry point without sacrificing capability or uptime.
