About ExOne

USAEst. 1995

ExOne traces its origins to 1995, when Extrude Hone Corporation established its ProMetal division to commercialize metal 3D printing technology originally developed at MIT. The division launched the industry's first commercial metal binder jet system, the ProMetal RTS-300, in 1998, with the first installation going to Motorola. In 2005, when Extrude Hone was sold to Kennametal, the 3D printing assets were spun off into a standalone entity that was formally renamed The ExOne Company. ExOne went public on Nasdaq under the symbol XONE in 2013 and was acquired by Desktop Metal in November 2021 for approximately $561 million, continuing to operate from its Pennsylvania headquarters.

ExOne's metal binder jet product line spans a full range of production scales. The Innovent+ is the company's entry-level research and small-part system and has been the world's best-selling metal binder jetting platform since 2016. The X1 25PRO is a mid-size production printer that combines the fine MIM powder-handling capability of the Innovent+ with a larger build envelope, targeting metal injection molding, powder metallurgy, and general manufacturing customers. At the top of the range, the X1 160PRO delivers 160 liters of build volume at print speeds exceeding 10,000 cm³ per hour, making it the largest commercially available metal binder jetting system ExOne produced. All three Pro-series machines share the same piezo printhead modules and support a broad material library including 316L, 304L, and 17-4PH stainless steels, Inconel 718 and 625, tool steels, cobalt chrome, copper, and tungsten carbide-cobalt.

ExOne metal 3D printers serve demanding end markets where geometric complexity, material performance, and production throughput are critical. Core industries include aerospace and defense, where the systems produce lightweight structural and mission-critical components; automotive, where high-volume serial production of sintered metal parts is a priority; medical device manufacturing, which requires biocompatible alloys and intricate geometries; and energy and heavy equipment sectors that depend on durable, complex metal parts. The binder jetting process also reduces material waste to under five percent, making it attractive for manufacturers with sustainability mandates.

Buyers seeking used ExOne metal 3D printers are drawn by the platform's proven industrial pedigree and the significant capital savings compared to new-system pricing. ExOne machines are built to production-grade standards with robust mechanical frames and open material systems, meaning operators are not locked into proprietary powders. The shared printhead architecture across the Pro series makes spare parts and consumables interchangeable, lowering long-term maintenance costs. Because ExOne systems were widely deployed in research institutions, aerospace suppliers, and contract manufacturers, well-maintained used units regularly become available, offering buyers a cost-effective path to industrial-scale binder jet metal printing.

Metal 3D printers build production parts from powder — binder jet, powder-bed fusion (DMLS/SLM), and related additive systems. Binder-jet machines (ExOne X-Series, Desktop Metal) print with a liquid binder then sinter; laser powder-bed machines fuse metal powder layer by layer. Used systems come from R&D labs, universities, and production cells and often include depowdering, curing, and powder-handling equipment.
