About Covel

USAEst. 1890

Covel Manufacturing Company traces its origins to 1886, when Milo Covel began producing saw-sharpening machinery in Chicago, Illinois. The company was formally incorporated in 1890 and eventually relocated to Benton Harbor, Michigan, where it grew into a significant American machine tool builder. In 1927 Covel briefly merged with Hanchett to form the Covel-Hanchett Manufacturing Company, which at the time claimed to be the world's largest grinding machine company, though the partnership dissolved by 1931. Covel continued to expand independently, acquiring additional companies over the decades, until it was sold to Clausing in 1968, after which Clausing continued to manufacture surface and centerless grinders under the Covel name and supply parts for existing machines.

Covel's core product line centered on horizontal-spindle reciprocating surface grinders offered in both hand-feed and hydraulic-feed configurations across a wide range of table sizes. Well-documented models include the No. 7 and 7A series 6×12 surface grinders, the No. 10, 10-H, and 10-F/P series 6×18 hydraulic surface grinders, the No. 15 and 17 series 10×18 surface grinders, the No. 35 and 35-B 8×24 surface grinders, and the No. 60 14×24 surface grinder. The company also produced universal tool and cutter grinders, drill grinders, and opposed disc and centerless grinders. Under Clausing ownership, updated models such as the 4010, 4011, and 4013 carried the Clausing-Covel designation.

Covel surface grinders found their way into a broad range of metalworking industries. Toolrooms and job shops relied on the reciprocating surface grinders for precision flat grinding of dies, fixtures, and machine components. The automotive sector was a particularly heavy user: hundreds of Covel opposed disc and centerless grinders were employed in the manufacture of piston rings and pistons, with major suppliers such as Sealed Power running Covel equipment well into the 1990s. General metalworking plants, maintenance shops, and vocational training programs also adopted the machines for their straightforward operation and reliable performance.

Buyers seeking used Covel surface grinders today are drawn to the machines' heavy cast-iron construction, which resists vibration and holds geometry well even after decades of service. The reciprocating hydraulic models in particular are valued for smooth, consistent table travel and the ability to hold tight tolerances on flat surfaces. Because Covel grinders share wheel adapter standards with other well-known American grinder brands, sourcing compatible tooling and grinding wheels remains practical. Machines that have been well maintained command steady resale interest among toolroom operators and small shops looking for a capable, no-frills surface grinder at a fraction of the cost of new equipment.
