About Bridgeport
Bridgeport was founded in 1938 by Rudolph F. Bannow and Magnus Wahlstrom in Bridgeport, Connecticut, with the goal of producing milling machines for their own plant. The first turret milling machine shipped on August 8, 1938, and the company formally incorporated as Bridgeport Machines Inc. in 1939. Decades of steady growth followed, fueled by post-World War II manufacturing demand and a global expansion that eventually included production facilities in England, Germany, and beyond. In 2004 the brand was acquired by Hardinge Inc., and in 2023 it passed to InCompass, where it continues to operate today.
The cornerstone of the Bridgeport lineup is the Series I vertical knee mill, a turret-style machine with a swiveling, tiltable head, R-8 spindle, and dovetail ways that set the standard for toolroom versatility. The Series II offered a larger, higher-horsepower variant for shops needing more capacity. Bridgeport later introduced the EZ-Trak line of CNC-controlled knee mills — including the EZ-Trak DX and EZ-Trak SX — bridging manual operation and full CNC capability on a familiar knee-mill platform. On the machining center side, the Torq-Cut series (including the TC4, Torq-Cut 22, and Torq-Cut 30) brought enclosed, automatic-tool-changer VMC performance to job shops, while the V-Series and GX-Series vertical machining centers extended the brand into higher-speed, higher-precision production environments.
Bridgeport machines serve a broad cross-section of manufacturing industries. Small and medium-sized job shops have long been the brand's core market, producing components destined for the automotive, aerospace, and defense sectors. Medical device manufacturers rely on Bridgeport mills for prototype and short-run precision parts, and the machines are equally common in electronics fabrication, mold and die making, and educational and training facilities where machinists learn the fundamentals of vertical milling.
Used Bridgeport mills and machining centers remain among the most sought-after equipment on the secondary market for several reasons. The Series I's cast-iron construction and straightforward mechanical design give it a service life measured in decades, and an enormous installed base means that replacement parts, tooling, and qualified service technicians are readily available. Buyers also value the brand's broad model range: a used Bridgeport knee mill offers an affordable entry point for toolrooms and training shops, while a used Torq-Cut or V-Series VMC delivers enclosed CNC performance at a fraction of new-machine cost. Strong name recognition and consistent resale value make Bridgeport one of the most liquid assets a machine shop can hold.
