About Boyar-Schultz
Boyar-Schultz was founded in the United States and grew into one of the most recognized names in American surface grinding, operating out of Broadview, Illinois. The company became a division of Esterline Corporation and, at its peak, produced a broad catalog of machine tools including surface grinders, profile grinders, screw machine tools, and deep-hole drilling equipment. Manufacturing operations were later relocated to Rockford, Illinois before the company's surface grinder product lines were eventually sold off, with rights passing to W.A. Whitney, and the tooling business continuing under Lester Detterbeck Enterprises.
The heart of the Boyar-Schultz lineup was its horizontal-spindle reciprocating surface grinder range. The Challenger series covered 6x12 and 6x18 table sizes and was offered in both hand-feed and hydraulic configurations — models such as the H612, HR612, H618, HR618, 1A618, 2A618, and the larger 818-series machines gave buyers a choice of manual or power table traverse to suit toolroom or production environments. The company also produced the Pro-Grind V CNC surface grinder series (PGV and PGVH) for shops requiring automated cycle control, as well as the earlier 6-12 DeLuxe line.
