About Used Clean Rooms

A clean room is a controlled space, not a machine that cuts or molds. The frames that repeat here are softwall rooms: a structure, vinyl panels, strip doors and HEPA fan units in the ceiling that push filtered air down and out. Halco is a name on these rooms. A hardwall classified suite built into a building is a construction project. A softwall room is something that can be taken down and moved, and that is the usual buy.

Size is length, width and the height under your ceiling. The room has to fit the work and still leave aisle around it. Air changes come from the number and the size of the HEPA units. More units and a tighter enclosure hold a cleaner condition. The cleanliness claim, when someone states one, is a class. It is only true if the filters, the pressure and the way people enter are still right. An anteroom, when it is included, is where gowns and the pressure step live. Strip doors leak more than a hard door. They are fine for a modest requirement and a problem for a tighter one.

Filters load up. A HEPA unit with a dirty prefilter moves less air. Vinyl yellows and tears. Frames rack out of square if they were moved badly. Lights and magnehelic gauges, when they are there, tell you whether the room is still pushing air. A room without a way to see differential pressure is a tent with fans.

A used clean room should be stood up far enough to run the fans, or you should at least power each HEPA unit and feel the discharge. Count the units. Measure the frame against the ceiling and the floor space. Look at the vinyl and the filters. Confirm whether the anteroom and the doors are in the same lot or were left on the building. A set of fan units without the frame is a filter purchase, not a room. Match the cleanliness you need to the number of filters, not to the word on the old sign.

How to Choose a Used Clean Room

How to Size a Softwall Room

Measure the bay first. Footprint has to hold the work, and height has to clear the filters and the people. A room that looks right in a photo can still miss the ceiling you have. Then count the fan-filter units. More filters and more air are what support a tighter cleanliness class, and a curtain frame with no fans is not a clean room yet. Power has to feed those fans. A gowning room, if you need one, is extra floor and its own entry, not a corner of the same curtain. Leveling feet matter on a floor that is not flat. Write length, width, height and filter count before you compare two frames.

Softwall Rooms and Gowning Rooms

A softwall clean room is a frame, clear curtains and HEPA fans in the ceiling. Halco is the name that repeats on these portable rooms. A gowning room is the space where people dress before they step into the cleaner air, and it may be a separate listing or part of the same one. A hardwall panel can appear in the set too, and it is still an enclosure you assemble, not a built suite. Class is the spec to ask for. Curtains that are torn or clouded, and filters that are loaded, change that class even when the frame is square. Confirm the fans, the curtains and the entry before you treat the room as complete.

Clean Room Specs to Compare

Footprint

The work has to fit, and the room has to fit the bay.

Height

Filters and people both need room. A tall frame will not assemble under a low deck.

Fan-filter count

Air from those fans is what makes the enclosure a clean room.

Class

A curtain frame does not name a class by itself. Ask what it was built to.

Gowning

Dressing space is part of the process. Confirm it is in the purchase.

Curtains and entry

Torn curtains and missing strips let room air in.

What to Inspect on a Used Clean Room

  • Measure footprint and height

Length, width and height have to fit the bay and the ceiling, not only the photo.

  • Count the HEPA fans

Each fan-filter unit should be present. The count is the airflow.

  • Ask the cleanliness class

Get the class the room was built for. A frame alone does not state it.

  • Inspect curtains and strips

Clouded or torn vinyl and missing strip doors defeat the fans.

  • See if a gowning room is included

Dressing space may be a second frame. Do not assume it is in the lot.

  • Check lights and power

Lights, switches and the fan circuit should be identified before you plan the install.

  • Look at feet and filters

Leveling feet and the condition of each filter decide whether the room still performs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of clean room is on this group?

Portable and softwall rooms, plus gowning rooms. A softwall clean room is a frame, curtains and fan-filter units, and Halco is the name that repeats. A gowning room is where people dress before the cleaner air. This is not a built suite that is part of the building. Footprint, height and the number of HEPA fans are the size. A hardwall panel can appear too, and it is still an enclosure you assemble. Class is something you ask for, not something the curtains imply.

How do I size footprint, height and filters?

The frame has to fit the bay and the ceiling, with room for the filters and the work. Count the fan-filter units, because that air is what supports a cleanliness class. A larger footprint with too few fans will not hold the class a smaller, better-filtered room might. Power has to feed the fans. Leveling feet matter if the floor is uneven. Write length, width, height and filter count. A photo of curtains without the ceiling does not answer those numbers.

Do I need a gowning room with the clean room?

If people must dress before they enter, yes. A gowning room can be part of the same listing or a second frame. It needs its own entry and enough floor to change. Buying the clean room and discovering the gowning space was a different lot is a common miss. Ask. Strip doors on the clean room itself still matter, because missing strips dump ordinary room air inside even when the fans are running.

What should I inspect on a softwall room?

The frame for straightness, the curtains for tears and clouding, the strip doors, the fan-filter units and the lights. A loaded HEPA filter is not the class it was when it was new. Leveling feet should still adjust. Confirm the control switch and how the fans are powered. Photos should show the ceiling, not only the vinyl. Halco portable rooms are the pattern that repeats. A square frame with ruined curtains is a rebuild.

Does a curtain frame have a cleanliness class?

Only if it was built and filtered to one. The curtains do not create the class. The fan-filter count, the entry and the condition of the filters do. Ask what class the room was sold as, and do not invent one from the word portable. A room with missing fans or torn vinyl will not meet the class it had on day one. That question belongs in the same note as footprint and height.

Can I move a clean room to another bay?

That is the point of a portable frame. It still has to fit the new ceiling and the new floor, and the fans still need power. Measure before you take it apart. A gowning room moves the same way if it is a frame and not a built wall. Filters and curtains should be inspected after the move, because vinyl tears in transit. The class does not travel automatically. The hardware does.
