Hardinge traces its roots to 1890, when brothers Henry and Franklin Hardinge began making watchmakers' tools in the back of a Chicago boarding house. In 1931 the lathe business, along with the company name and the Cataract trademark, was acquired by a New York collet maker and relocated to Elmira, New York, which became Hardinge's home for the next nine decades. The company grew into an international builder of precision metalcutting machines and became the dominant name in toolroom and second-operation turning. In May 2018 Privet Fund Management took Hardinge private in a transaction valued at roughly $245 million and later moved the headquarters to Berwyn, Pennsylvania.

The product portfolio spans three segments. Turning and milling covers Hardinge Super-Precision CNC lathes, the Talent and Conquest CNC turning lines, the classic manual toolroom machines such as the HLV-H, DSM-59, and DV-59 second-operation lathes, and Bridgeport machining centers and knee mills. Grinding covers a deep bench of acquired European brands: Kellenberger cylindrical grinders, Jones & Shipman, Hauser jig grinders, Tripet, Tschudin, Voumard internal grinders, and Usach. Workholding covers Hardinge collets in 5C, 16C, 20C, and Swiss styles, along with Buck Chuck, Forkardt, and Ohio Tool Works products.

On July 29, 2024 Hardinge Inc. and six affiliated debtors filed voluntary Chapter 11 petitions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, jointly administered under Case No. 24-11605 before Judge J. Kate Stickles. The filing followed a liquidity crisis triggered when Chinese securities regulators required additional review of a planned sale of Hardinge's China operations. Centre Lane Partners had purchased Hardinge's secured debt one week before the petition date and entered the case as DIP lender and stalking horse with a $100 million credit bid for substantially all assets. A plan of liquidation was confirmed on December 20, 2024 and went effective December 31, 2024. Only the U.S. entities filed; the international entities were not part of the proceeding, and the machine and workholding businesses continue operating under Centre Lane ownership.

Collets, chucks, and workholding remain in current production and are readily sourced. For grinding machines carrying the Kellenberger, Hauser, or Tschudin badge, confirm which entity now supports that specific brand before assuming parts availability, as those brands sit in different parts of the reorganized structure.
