About FARO
FARO Technologies started in 1982 and is headquartered in Lake Mary, Florida. The company began with articulated measurement devices and later focused on industrial metrology. AMETEK completed its acquisition of FARO on July 21, 2025, and FARO now sits in AMETEK's Ultra Precision Technologies division. The official site remains faro.com.
The core hardware is the FaroArm, a portable coordinate measuring machine that probes parts on the floor instead of on a fixed granite CMM. Current arms are the Quantum X series, offered in several lengths and accuracy grades, with optional laser line probes for non-contact scanning. Earlier generations that still circulate used include the Edge, Quantum, Quantum Max, Prime, Fusion, and Platinum.
FARO also builds the Vantage laser tracker for large assemblies and the Focus laser scanner for plant and site capture, plus CAM2 software for inspection against CAD. A used buyer usually cares most about measuring range, axis count, whether a laser line probe is included, and whether the last factory calibration is still current.
The Edge generation, introduced around 2011, is a 7-axis arm that was commonly paired with a Laser Line Probe. It has been superseded by the Quantum and Quantum X ScanArms, so resale prices sit well below late-model arms. FARO service can still certify many Edge arms; an expired certificate is a buyer cost, not a reason the arm cannot be used.
On the used market, confirm the measuring volume (1.8 m, 2.7 m, and 3.7 m Edge lengths were common), that the probe handle and hard case are present, and whether software licenses transfer. Is a used FARO Edge still supported?
FARO service can still calibrate many Edge arms. Ask for the last certificate date. An expired cert usually means a recertification cost, not that the arm is unusable.
What does the measuring length mean?
The length, such as 9 ft or 2.7 m, is the spherical working volume of the arm, not a machine-tool travel. Match it to the largest part you need to probe in one setup.
Does the arm include a laser scanner?
Only if a Laser Line Probe is listed with it. An arm sold alone probes with a hard probe. Scanning requires the probe head, and often its calibration plate.
What software does a used FaroArm need?
Inspection is typically done in CAM2 or a third-party package such as PolyWorks. Licenses do not always transfer with the hardware, so confirm what is included before you buy.
How does an Edge compare with a Quantum arm?
The Edge is an earlier 7-axis generation. Quantum, Quantum Max, and Quantum X arms are newer, generally more accurate, and cost more used. The Edge remains a practical portable CMM when the volume and accuracy fit the work.
