About Killion

United States

Killion Extruders Inc. was founded and operated out of Cedar Grove, New Jersey, where it built a reputation as a specialist in laboratory and mid-size production extrusion machinery for the plastics industry. In March 1995, Davis-Standard — then a division of Crompton & Knowles Corp. and the dominant force in U.S. single-screw extrusion — acquired Killion Extruders Inc., citing the brand's unique capabilities in specialty laboratory equipment and small-diameter medical tubing technology. The Killion name has been carried forward by Davis-Standard as a dedicated product line serving the lab and specialty extrusion market.

The Killion product line centers on compact single-screw extruders typically ranging from 3/4-inch to 2-inch screw diameters with 24:1 L/D ratios, covering applications from profiles and tubing to blown film, cast film, sheet extrusion, wire coating, and mono- and multi-filament production. Key series include the KL and KN bench and pedestal extruders, the KLB extended L/D variant, the HPE horizontal and adjustable coextrusion extruders, and the KXE laboratory and specialty series. Complete turnkey systems — incorporating downstream vacuum tanks, water troughs, pullers, winders, cutters, and pelletizers — round out the offering.

Killion extruders serve a broad range of end markets. Research universities, compounders, and resin producers rely on them for material testing and rheological studies. Medical device manufacturers use Killion equipment for small-diameter tubing and catheter extrusion. Packaging converters, film producers, and specialty sheet processors depend on Killion lines for short-run and pilot-scale work, while fiber and filament producers use them for mono- and multi-filament development.

On the secondary market, Killion machines are consistently sought after for several reasons. Their robust mechanical construction — oversized thrust bearings, precision gearboxes, and high-quality barrel and screw metallurgy — translates into long service lives with relatively low maintenance demands. The standardized 24:1 L/D architecture and well-documented screw geometry make replacement screws and barrels straightforward to source. Because many Killion extruders were originally installed in low-cycle laboratory environments, used units often retain substantial remaining service life, offering buyers a cost-effective path to proven extrusion capability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Killion known for?

Killion is best known for compact, high-quality single-screw extruders designed for laboratory, pilot-line, and mid-size production applications in the plastics industry. The brand built its reputation on precise, reliable machines for sheet, film, filament, tubing, and profile extrusion, and is now a specialty product line under Davis-Standard.

Who manufactures Killion extruders today?

Killion extruders are produced under the Davis-Standard brand following Davis-Standard's acquisition of Killion Extruders Inc. in 1995. Davis-Standard continues to market the Killion line as its dedicated laboratory and specialty extrusion platform, maintaining the product series and technical support infrastructure.

What types of used Killion equipment are most commonly available?

The most commonly traded used Killion equipment includes KL- and KN-series single-screw lab extruders in 3/4-inch to 1-1/2-inch sizes, complete lab sheet extrusion lines, and filament or ribbon extrusion systems. Because many of these machines spent their working lives in low-cycle R&D environments, used examples are often found in good mechanical condition.
