About Charmilles

SwitzerlandEst. 1954

Charmilles was founded in 1954 in Geneva, Switzerland, at a time when electrical discharge machining was still an emerging industrial technology. The company quickly established itself as one of the earliest commercial EDM manufacturers, introducing innovations such as the Isopulse generator for improved spark stability and the Isocut electrode-orbiting system that redefined cavity machining. In 1996, Charmilles merged with fellow Swiss EDM leader Agie to form the Agie Charmilles Group, which later became part of GF Machining Solutions and is now operating under the United Machining Solutions umbrella.

Charmilles built its product reputation around two flagship families. The Roboform series covers CNC die-sinking (sinker) EDMs, ranging from compact shop-floor models like the Roboform 20A, 22, 23, 30, and 40 up to large-capacity machines such as the Roboform 55, 350, and 550. These sinker EDMs use a shaped electrode to erode cavities in hardened conductive workpieces with exceptional surface finish and dimensional accuracy. The Robofil series addresses wire EDM applications, with models including the Robofil 240, 290, 300, 400, 440, 510, and 690, offering submerged machining, automatic wire threading, and five-axis taper cutting capabilities.

Charmilles EDM machines serve industries where hard-material precision is non-negotiable. Tool and die makers rely on Roboform sinker EDMs to produce injection mold cavities, stamping dies, and extrusion tooling. Aerospace manufacturers use both sinker and wire EDM platforms for turbine components and structural parts in nickel superalloys and hardened steels. Medical device producers, automotive suppliers, and electronics manufacturers also depend on Charmilles equipment for tight-tolerance work that conventional cutting tools cannot achieve.

Used Charmilles EDMs attract strong buyer interest for several reasons. The machines are built to Swiss precision standards with robust castings, linear glass-scale feedback, and proprietary generators that maintain accuracy over decades of service. Consumable parts such as filters, wire guides, and power-feed contacts remain widely available through the Agie Charmilles service network and independent suppliers. The Roboform and Robofil platforms hold their value well on the secondary market because their CNC controls are well documented, operator training resources are plentiful, and the machines can be returned to factory-level performance with straightforward maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Charmilles best known for?

Charmilles is best known for its Roboform CNC sinker EDM and Robofil wire EDM machine lines, developed in Geneva, Switzerland starting in 1954. The brand pioneered key EDM technologies including the Isopulse generator and Isocut electrode-orbiting system, setting long-standing standards for precision and surface finish in electrical discharge machining.

Are used Charmilles EDM machines still well supported?

Yes. Consumable parts such as wire guides, power-feed contacts, and dielectric filters for Charmilles EDMs are widely available through the Agie Charmilles service network and independent EDM suppliers. The Roboform and Robofil CNC controls are well documented, making it straightforward to find trained technicians and operator support for older machines.

What industries use Charmilles sinker EDM machines?

Charmilles sinker EDMs are widely used in tool and die manufacturing, injection mold making, aerospace component production, automotive stamping die work, and medical device manufacturing. Their ability to machine hardened steels and exotic alloys to tight tolerances and fine surface finishes makes them a standard choice wherever conventional cutting tools reach their limits.
