About Econogrind

United States

Econogrind emerged as the size reduction division of Economizer USA, itself a unit within the ACS Group based in Wood Dale, Illinois. The line was developed to give plastics processors access to affordable, production-ready granulators built to German engineering specifications and manufactured in China, filling a gap in the market for value-priced auxiliary equipment backed by a major North American service organization.

The Econogrind product range spanned roughly 20 models organized into four distinct series. The ESL (Economizer Low Speed) series ran at 150 to 200 rpm and featured a V-shaped row of staggered rotor knives — making it the go-to choice for quiet, beside-the-press operation. The ESL 180/430, one of the most widely circulated models, offered a 17-inch by 12-inch cutting chamber with three rows of 15 blades on a staggered rotor and side discharge. The ES series addressed heavier central granulation duties with three or five rotor knives, while the ESP series added a nearly level feed hopper specifically designed to handle long pipes and profiles without the platforms or cavities that conventional machines require. The ESC series rounded out the lineup with a compact, mobile, soundproofed design suited to tight press-side environments.

Econogrind granulators were aimed squarely at injection molding, blow molding, and extrusion operations where in-line or beside-the-press scrap reclaim is a daily requirement. Plastics processors in packaging, consumer goods, pipe and profile extrusion, and general industrial molding relied on these machines to reduce runners, sprues, rejected parts, and trim scrap back to reusable regrind without interrupting production flow.

On the used market, Econogrind granulators — particularly the ESL 180/430 — remain sought after because of their straightforward mechanical design, wide availability of aftermarket replacement knives and screens from multiple North American suppliers, and low operating costs. The low-speed rotor architecture minimizes dust, heat, and noise, which keeps regrind quality high and maintenance intervals manageable. Buyers looking for a compact, reliable beside-the-press granulator at a fraction of new-equipment cost consistently turn to used Econogrind machines as a practical solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Econogrind known for?

Econogrind is best known for its value-priced plastics granulators, particularly the ESL series of low-speed, beside-the-press models designed to quietly reclaim sprues, runners, and rejected parts at the injection molding or extrusion machine. The brand was the size reduction division of Economizer USA, a unit of the ACS Group headquartered in Wood Dale, Illinois.

What are the main Econogrind granulator series?

Econogrind offered four main series: the ESL (low-speed, 150–200 rpm) for beside-the-press use, the ES heavy-duty central granulators, the ESP series with a level-feed hopper for pipes and profiles, and the ESC compact soundproofed series for press-side grinding. The ESL 180/430 is the most commonly encountered model on the used market.

Are parts still available for used Econogrind granulators?

Yes — replacement rotor knives, bed knives, and screens for Econogrind granulators, including the ESL 180/430 and other ESL and ES models, are stocked by multiple North American aftermarket suppliers. The straightforward mechanical design of these machines makes sourcing consumable wear parts relatively easy, which is one reason used Econogrind granulators remain a practical choice for plastics processors.
