About Toshiba
Toshiba Machine traces its origins to 1938, when the machine tool division of Shibaura Engineering Works was separately incorporated as Shibaura Machine Tool Co., Ltd. — Japan's first large-scale machine tool manufacturer. The company produced its first injection molding machine in 1956 and, after merging with its parent, became Toshiba Machine Co., Ltd. in the early 1960s. It entered the North American market in 1974 and steadily grew into one of the most recognized injection molding press brands on the continent. In April 2020 the company rebranded globally as Shibaura Machine, returning to its Shibaura heritage, though the Toshiba Machine name remains the identifier for the large installed base of presses already in the field.
The injection molding lineup that defined Toshiba Machine in North America centers on two major families. The ISG series — including the ISGS and ISGT variants — are horizontal hydraulic toggle-clamp machines covering a wide range of tonnages and shot sizes, with the GS designation covering medium to large frames and the GT designation reserved for the largest wide-platen configurations. The EC series represents Toshiba's all-electric platform, with servo motors driving all machine axes to eliminate hydraulic oil entirely; the EC110 and related models in the EC line deliver the fast cycle times and clean operating environment that precision molders demand. Both families have been offered with successive generations of the Injectvisor control system, from the V10 through the V21 and beyond, giving operators a consistent and well-documented interface across machine vintages.
Toshiba injection molding machines serve a broad cross-section of plastics processing industries. Automotive parts manufacturers rely on the ISG hydraulic series for large structural and trim components, while the EC all-electric machines are favored in medical device manufacturing, electronics, and optical component production where cleanroom compatibility and tight process control are non-negotiable. The packaging sector benefits from the machines' fast dry-cycle times and repeatable clamping force, and consumer goods molders across a wide range of part sizes have long specified Toshiba presses for high-volume production.
Used Toshiba injection molding machines hold their value and attract strong buyer interest for several reasons. The machines are built to Japanese quality standards with heavy-duty frames and precision-ground components that continue to perform reliably well into their second and third decades of service. The Injectvisor control platform is well documented and widely understood by process technicians, reducing retraining costs. Parts availability for the ISG and EC series remains good through Shibaura Machine's North American service network as well as independent suppliers, and the all-electric EC machines offer energy consumption significantly lower than comparable hydraulic presses — a meaningful operating cost advantage that carries over to used equipment buyers.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Toshiba Machine best known for in injection molding?
Toshiba Machine is best known for its EC all-electric and ISG hydraulic horizontal injection molding machines, which are recognized for shot-to-shot repeatability, robust construction, and long service life. The EC series was among the earliest all-electric injection presses widely adopted in North America, while the ISG and ISGS hydraulic series became workhorses for medium to large-tonnage production across automotive, packaging, and consumer goods applications.
What is the difference between the Toshiba ISG series and the EC series?
The Toshiba ISG series — including ISGS and ISGT variants — are hydraulic toggle-clamp horizontal injection molding machines suited to a wide range of tonnages and shot sizes, making them popular for structural and large-part molding. The EC series machines are fully all-electric, using servo motors to drive all axes without hydraulic oil, which delivers cleaner operation, lower energy consumption, and the high precision repeatability required for medical, optical, and electronics molding.
Is Toshiba Machine the same as Shibaura Machine?
Yes — Toshiba Machine Co., Ltd. rebranded as Shibaura Machine Co., Ltd. effective April 1, 2020, returning to the Shibaura name that the company carried when it was founded in 1938. The machines manufactured and sold under the Toshiba Machine name prior to 2020 are the same product line now supported by Shibaura Machine, and parts and service for legacy Toshiba-branded presses continue to be available through the Shibaura Machine network.
