About Battenfeld

GermanyEst. 1947

Battenfeld was founded in 1947 in Meinerzhagen, Germany and became one of Europe's most important injection molding machine builders. The most important thing to understand about the Battenfeld name today is that it now covers two entirely separate companies, and used-equipment buyers regularly conflate them.

The injection molding line: Battenfeld Kunststoffmaschinen, the Austrian parent of the injection molding business, declared insolvency on January 3, 2008 under then-owner Adcuram, a Munich private equity firm. Austrian auxiliary and robotics maker Wittmann took it over effective April 1, 2008 and renamed it Wittmann Battenfeld, headquartered in Kottingbrunn, Austria. Wittmann deliberately kept the businesses operating as independent specialist brands rather than merging them. From January 2022, completed by the K 2022 show, the Wittmann Group consolidated to a single Wittmann brand across all advertising and product lines, though legal entity names including Wittmann Battenfeld Inc., the U.S. headquarters in Torrington, Connecticut, were left unchanged. So a recent machine may carry Wittmann branding while an older one carries Battenfeld or Wittmann Battenfeld, all from the same lineage.

The extrusion line: Battenfeld Extrusionstechnik of Bad Oeynhausen, Germany combined with Cincinnati Extrusion of Vienna and B+C Extrusion Systems of Foshan, China to trade under the single brand battenfeld-cincinnati, previously separate entities under holding company BC Extrusion Holding. That group was subsequently acquired by European investment group Nimbus. It has no corporate connection to Wittmann Battenfeld. If you are sourcing parts for a Battenfeld pipe, profile, film, or sheet extruder, the support path runs through battenfeld-cincinnati, not Wittmann - and note the further coincidence that Cincinnati Extrusion is unrelated to Cincinnati Milacron.

Current injection molding lines include the EcoPower all-electric series for precision and clean-room work, the SmartPower servo-hydraulic toggle line, the MacroPower two-platen large-tonnage range from roughly 400 to over 2,000 tons for automotive and large-part molding, MicroPower for micro-injection molding, and TM Xpress for high-speed thin-wall packaging. Pre-2008 legacy machines including the HM, Plus, Unilog B6, BA, TM, and ECONOMY series remain very common on the secondary market. Battenfeld durability is not a marketing claim: an all-electric 60-ton Battenfeld press reportedly built in 1956 ran in a Florida molding plant until 2018 and was still largely functional when retired, after which it was donated to Wittmann Battenfeld and refurbished for display at the Torrington headquarters.

Used Battenfeld machines appeal for precise German engineering, integrated automation - Wittmann robots and auxiliaries are designed to work with the presses natively - and broad U.S. service coverage through Torrington. Inspect screw and barrel wear, Unilog or B6/B8 control function and software version, servo motor and drive condition on EcoPower machines, toggle linkage wear, and tie-bar condition on MacroPower two-platen machines.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Battenfeld make?

Battenfeld (Wittmann Battenfeld) manufactures injection molding machines including the EcoPower all-electric, SmartPower servo-hydraulic toggle, MacroPower two-platen large-tonnage (up to 2,000+ tons), MicroPower micro-molding, and TM Xpress high-speed packaging series.

Why buy a used Battenfeld injection molding machine?

Used Battenfeld machines offer premium German engineering at 40-60% off new pricing. Their precise control, robust toggle and clamp construction, and seamless integration with Wittmann robots and auxiliaries make them excellent value for technical, packaging, and automotive molding.
