About Used Case Packers & Carton Tapers
A case sealer closes a corrugated box with tape. A case packer puts product into that box before the tape goes on. They often sit in one row and they are not the same machine. The sealer is a tape head, belts and a frame sized to the box. The packer is a collator and a loader. Buying one does not give you the other.
Uniform or random is the sealer split. A uniform machine is set for one length, width and height and runs that box all day. A random machine measures each box and adjusts, which is what a line of mixed shippers needs. Side-belt machines carry the box by the sides. Top-and-bottom belt machines carry it by the flaps and suit a different box. Tape width is usually 2 or 3 inches, and the head has to match the width your standard calls for. Top and bottom taping is the common request. Top only leaves the bottom to someone else.
The tape head is the wear item. Knives, springs, rollers and the one-way tension that wipes the tape are what fail. A head that wrinkles tape or leaves a tail that does not stick is a rebuild, not a new frame. Belts glaze and slip, and a box that skews in the throat is often a belt or a flight that is tired. Flap kickers, when the machine folds the flaps, have to meet your box style. A machine that expects the flaps already closed will not close them.
A packer upstream has its own size range, its own change parts and its own rate. Cases per minute have to match the sealer and the stacker after it. A packer set for a bottle will not drop a pouch without different tooling. Do not size either machine from the press that made the product. Size them from the box.
A used case sealer should be run with your box and your tape. Listen for a slip in the belts. Watch the wipe. Confirm top and bottom, tape width, and whether the adjustment is a crank for one size or a measure-every-box random frame. Check the infeed height against your conveyor. A sealer that is right on the tape and wrong on the pass height still does not join the line. Eastey is the name that repeats on these tapers.
How to Choose Used Case Packers & Carton Tapers
Uniform vs Random Case Sealer
A uniform machine is locked to one length, width and height. It is fast and simple when every carton matches. A random machine measures the case and moves the heads, which is what you want when heights change through the day.
Random is not magic. Very small and very large cases can still fall outside the range. If you run one shipper, do not pay for measuring you will never use. If you run a mix, a fixed mast will stop the line. Decide from the cartons you actually ship.
How to Size a Case Sealer
Size to the longest, widest and tallest carton, and to the tape width your standard calls for. Top and bottom heads are the usual pair. Belts have to carry the weight without slipping.
If the row is a case packer rather than a taper, size the pack pattern and the case blank instead, then still plan a sealer if the carton leaves open. Infeed height has to meet the conveyor. Air and power are part of the size, not a footnote. Tape width is part of that size as well.
Case Packers & Carton Tapers Specs to Compare
| Spec | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Case range | Uniform machines run one carton. Random machines adjust. Your tallest and shortest case have to sit inside that range. |
| Tape width | The heads have to take that tape. A wider or narrower roll is a different head, not a setting. |
| Seal faces | Most shippers want both flaps taped. A top-only head leaves the bottom to someone else. |
| Belt drive | The belts have to grip your carton weight. A light belt slips on a heavy case and skews the tape. |
| Pack vs tape | A packer loads the case. A sealer tapes it. This group lists both, and they are not one machine. |
| Infeed height | The carton has to enter at the line height. A mismatch is a conveyor change before the first tape. |

What to Inspect on Used Case Packers & Carton Tapers
Tape a real carton
Watch the tails wipe down. A flagging tail or a missed center is the head, not the carton brand.
Identify packer or taper
Confirm you are looking at a sealer, a packer, or a machine that does both. The checks differ.
Run the belts
Belts should track and grip. Glazed or cracked belts slip and pull the tape off center.
Check the knife
The tape should cut cleanly. A dull knife leaves a rag that sticks to the next carton.
Measure the case range
Your tallest and shortest carton have to fit. A random claim that misses your height is not random.
Match the tape width
The head has to take the roll you buy. Bring a roll if you can and see it mount.
Confirm height and power
Infeed should meet the conveyor, and air or voltage should match the plate on the head.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I size a case sealer for carton size?
Measure the longest, widest and tallest carton you ship, and the tape width your standard requires. A uniform case sealer is right when every carton matches. A random case sealer is right when heights change, and it still has a range it cannot leave. Belts have to carry the weight. Top and bottom heads are the usual pair. If the listing is a case packer, size the pack pattern and the blank, then plan a sealer if the carton leaves open.
What should I inspect on a used case sealer?
Tape a carton. The tails should wipe flat and the tape should sit on the center of the seam. Glazed belts slip and pull that tape off line. A dull knife leaves a rag on the next box. Confirm uniform or random, and that your tallest carton fits the mast. Check that your tape roll mounts. If the machine is a packer rather than a taper, run the pack motion with your product in mind. Air or voltage has to match.
Uniform or random: which case sealer do I need?
Uniform when one case size runs all day. The machine stays set and there is less to drift. Random when the height or the mix changes and you do not want a changeover between every order. Random still has a minimum and a maximum. Cartons outside that window will not be saved by a smarter controller. If you only ship one shipper, a random machine is extra mechanism. If you ship a mix, a fixed mast becomes the bottleneck. Decide from the cartons, not from the word automatic.
How is a case sealer different from a case packer?
A case sealer tapes a carton that already has product in it. A case packer loads the product into the case, and sometimes erects the blank. This group lists both because plants sell them together, and they are not the same purchase. A packer that discharges an open carton still needs a sealer downstream. A sealer cannot fill a box. Read the listing before you size tape heads onto a machine that has no tape. The palletizer comes after either way, once the carton is actually closed.
What tape width does a case sealer use?
The width the heads were built for, which should also be the width your shipping standard already names. A two-inch roll and a three-inch roll are not a knob. The wrong head will not hold the roll, or it will lay a tape that is wider or narrower than the flaps can support. Bring the spec. Look at the tape path and the wipe. A machine that tapes beautifully with a roll you cannot buy is not a fit.
Where does a case sealer sit after the packer?
Immediately after product is in the carton, and before the palletizer builds a layer. The sealer closes the box. The palletizer stacks closed boxes. The stretch wrapper contains the pallet after that. Putting a sealer at the dock will not build a pattern, and a palletizer will not stick a tape tail. Keep the packer and the sealer as two checks even when one frame claims to do both. Conveyor height has to match or the carton arrives crooked and the tape follows it.
