About Boy
Dr. Boy GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1968 in Neustadt-Fernthal, Germany and has focused exclusively on small-tonnage injection molding machines for its entire history. The company remains privately owned and has shipped nearly 50,000 machines worldwide across roughly five decades, supported by around 60 sales and service centers globally and its own U.S. subsidiary, BOY Machines, Inc. in Exton, Pennsylvania. Clamping forces top out at 1,250 kN, about 137.5 US tons, so BOY competes on precision and cost-per-part in the small-machine segment rather than on size.
The current lineup runs from the BOY XXS tabletop micro-molder up through machines at 600 kN, 800 kN with a two-platen system, 1,000 kN, and 1,250 kN in a footprint of only about 5.22 square meters. The BOY XS E succeeded the long-running BOY XS, adding a servo pump drive, the Procan ALPHA 6 control with a revised interface, and better access to machine components; a BOY XS V variant arranges the injection and clamping units vertically. The BOY 22 and its predecessors are the machines that built the company - more than 25,000 units of that series have shipped since 1968 through successive generations, which is why 22-series and 35-series machines dominate what reaches the secondary market.
A detail worth knowing on the XXS: unlike most machines at that size, it uses a reciprocating plasticizing screw with diameters from 8 to 18 mm working on a first-in-first-out principle rather than a plunger injection unit, with specific injection pressures up to roughly 39,900 psi. Its mold fixing platens are designed to accept the standard bolster plate systems used by the major micro-mold makers. BOY also builds plasticizing units for liquid silicone rubber and elastomer in addition to thermoplastics, so a used BOY may be configured for LSR work - verify which plasticizing package a machine carries, since converting between them is not trivial. The EconPlast plasticizing line and the BOY 2C M auxiliary injection unit are also worth knowing about: the 2C M has its own drive and control and is designed to convert an existing single-shot machine to two-component molding, which is a low-cost route to 2K capability on used equipment.
Typical applications are medical components, micro-electronics overmolding, connectors, optical parts, and small precision technical parts. Used BOY machines hold value because they are durable, simple to maintain, energy efficient with servo pump drives, and supported by the factory even at twenty-plus years of age. Inspect screw and barrel wear, which is straightforward on screws this small, Procan control generation and software version, servo pump or servo-electric drive condition, and the two-platen clamp lock. Because BOY machines have small footprints and modest power requirements, they are also among the easiest presses to rig and relocate, which matters when buying out of a plant closure.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does BOY make?
Dr. Boy GmbH manufactures small-tonnage injection molding machines from 6 to 100 tons, including the BOY XS and XXS tabletop micro-molders and the 22A, 35E, 60E, 80E, 90E, and 100E machines for medical, micro-electronic, optical, and small precision technical molding.
Why buy a used BOY injection molding machine?
Used BOY machines offer the world's most refined small-tonnage molding technology at 40-60% off new pricing. Their two-platen clamp design provides unusually large tie-bar spacing for the tonnage, servo-electric drives are highly energy efficient, and BOY's simple, durable construction routinely delivers 20+ years of service.
What should I inspect on a used BOY?
Check the small-diameter screw and barrel for wear (easy to inspect on micro machines), Procan Alpha control function and software version, servo pump or servo-electric drive condition, two-platen clamp lock and tie-bar wear, and overall maintenance records and shot count.
What are the most popular BOY models on the used market?
Common used BOY models include the BOY 22A (22 ton), BOY 35A/35E (35 ton), BOY 50A, BOY 60A/60E, BOY 80A/80E, BOY 90E, and BOY 100E. The BOY XS tabletop and XXS micro-molders also appear on the used market for medical and electronics applications.
Are parts and service available for BOY machines?
Yes. BOY Machines, Inc. in Exton, Pennsylvania provides parts, service, and technical support for the entire BOY product line, including legacy A-series machines. BOY's simple and well-documented design makes parts widely available even for older machines.
