HPM was incorporated in 1877 as the Hydraulic Press Manufacturing Company in Mount Gilead, Ohio, founded by Augustus Q. Tucker, an apple orchard owner and mechanical engineering student who built a hydraulic press for extracting cider. The company moved into metal forming presses in the early 1900s, developing its own pumps and valves, and in 1931 built what is generally credited as the first American-made injection molding machine. HPM held numerous patents in plastics processing, including the double and triple wave screw designs.

The ownership chain matters for anyone tracing parts and documentation. HPM merged with the Koehring Company of Milwaukee in 1956 and operated as the HPM Division of Koehring, staying in Mount Gilead. Koehring added the Cast-Master die casting line in 1959 and merged in the Prodex extrusion division in 1971, giving HPM its three-way product base of injection molding, extrusion, and die casting. In 1976 Koehring sold the division to a group of employees and local investors, and it was renamed HPM Corporation. HPM acquired New Britain, a Connecticut toggle injection molding machine builder, in 1983 and moved that production to Mount Gilead in 1986. Stadco acquired HPM in 1996 under an HPM-Stadco holding company, and Taylor's Industrial Services LLC purchased it in 2001, operating it as Taylor's Industrial Services, HPM Division.

The Mount Gilead plant closed at the end of December 2009, with HPM announcing on January 4, 2010 that operations there were suspended; the plastics and die casting operation did not reopen, and the historic plant was demolished beginning in December 2020. On March 29, 2011, Guangdong Yizumi Precision Machinery of China acquired all HPM intellectual property and established HPM North America Corporation in Marion, Ohio, renamed Yizumi-HPM Corporation in 2017 and now based in Iberia, Ohio. Yizumi-HPM builds injection molding machines from roughly 60 to 3,500 tons and hot and cold chamber die casting machines from 200 to 4,500 tons on designs derived from HPM originals.

The installed base is enormous - HPM presses remain in productive service across automotive, appliance, industrial container, and structural foam applications - which keeps acquisition prices low relative to capability. Popular lines include the TFR series two-platen large-tonnage hydraulic presses, the Vector toggle line, the MK series mid-range hydraulic toggles, the Pacer series, and horizontal and vertical hydraulic presses from 50 to over 4,000 tons, plus large structural foam presses still common in pallet, refuse container, and large enclosure production. Because the IP now sits with Yizumi-HPM, there is a documented parts path for legacy machines, and independent specialists have supported the brand since the closure - Epco LLC began marketing HPM parts, service, and remanufacturing to owners within weeks of the plant shutting. Inspect hydraulic system condition first, including pump and valve wear and reservoir contamination, then screw and barrel wear, tie-bar and platen wear on TFR two-platen machines, and control system status, since many of these machines have been retrofitted with newer PLCs and HMIs.
