About Mitutoyo
Mitutoyo Corporation was founded on October 22, 1934, by Yehan Numata in Tokyo, Japan, with a single product: the micrometer. Numata's founding mission was to produce the most accurate micrometer in the world and make it affordable for manufacturers everywhere. Over the following decades the company expanded steadily, adding calipers, dial indicators, height gages, gage blocks, and optical comparators to its catalog, and establishing its first North American subsidiary, Mitutoyo America Corporation, in 1963. Today the company is headquartered in Kawasaki, Japan, operates in more than 100 countries, and offers a portfolio of over 5,500 products.
The core product lines most relevant to precision inspection work are calipers, micrometers, gages, and optical comparators. Mitutoyo calipers are available in vernier, dial, and electronic Digimatic configurations across the Series 500 and related families, with options ranging from standard stainless-steel models to coolant-proof IP67-rated versions featuring Absolute encoder technology that eliminates the need to re-zero after power-up. Micrometers span the Series 103 mechanical outside models through the Series 293 Digimatic digital outside micrometers, covering ranges from fractional inch sizes up to 500 mm. Gage block sets are offered in rectangular and square forms, in both steel and CERA ceramic materials, across ASME grades 00 through AS-2. Optical comparators include the PH and PV series floor and bench models, such as the PV-600A and PV-5110, with screen diameters from 12 to 24 inches and interchangeable projection lenses at 5x, 10x, 20x, 50x, and 100x magnification.
Mitutoyo instruments serve quality control and dimensional inspection needs across a broad range of manufacturing industries. Automotive manufacturers rely on Mitutoyo calipers and micrometers to verify engine and drivetrain component tolerances. Aerospace and defense suppliers use optical comparators and gage blocks to confirm that structural and flight-critical parts meet strict geometric specifications. Medical device manufacturers depend on Mitutoyo's sub-micron accuracy for implants, surgical instruments, and diagnostic equipment. Electronics producers, precision mold makers, and general metalworking and CNC machining shops also count Mitutoyo among their primary inspection tool brands.
Buyers seeking used Mitutoyo calipers, micrometers, gage blocks, and optical comparators consistently find that these instruments hold up exceptionally well over time. Mitutoyo manufactures every instrument in its own facilities using tightly controlled processes, resulting in tools that maintain calibration and mechanical integrity through years of shop-floor use. Replacement parts, calibration services, and factory-trained technicians remain widely available through Mitutoyo America's nationwide service network, making it straightforward to return a used instrument to certified accuracy. The combination of robust construction, long service life, and strong parts support makes used Mitutoyo measuring equipment a cost-effective choice for shops that need professional-grade metrology without the price of new.
