About Tolomatic
Tolomatic was founded in 1954 by Burton Toles in Minneapolis, Minnesota, originally to build automatic bagging machinery for the flour industry. Along the way it invented the Float-A-Shaft right-angle gearbox and the cable cylinder, the first rodless pneumatic cylinder.
In the 1980s Tolomatic expanded its pneumatic line with the band cylinder and became a maker of all four types of rodless actuators: cable, band, slides and magnetically coupled. In the 1990s it moved into electric linear actuators, rod and rodless, screw and belt driven, along with drives, controllers and motors for complete linear motion systems.
Later products integrated servo motors into the actuator, including the ServoWeld line for robotic resistance spot welding, and Tolomatic brought planetary roller screw production in-house. The company is headquartered in Hamel, Minnesota, with facilities in China, Europe and Mexico.
In plastics and molding cells, Tolomatic actuators move parts, nests and inserts in and out of robot reach, run press-side fixtures and replace pneumatic cylinders where repeatable positioning matters. When buying used, check stroke length, drive type (screw or belt), the motor and drive, and the condition of the carriage and seals.
