About Demag
Demag's injection molding heritage began in 1950 when Ankerwerk Nürnberg — the plastics machinery arm of the broader Demag industrial group — started manufacturing injection molding machines in Germany. The division achieved a landmark in 1956 by building the world's first single-screw injection molding machine, establishing a reputation for engineering innovation that would define the brand for decades. After passing through the Mannesmann group and later forming the Demag Plastics Group, the business merged with Sumitomo Heavy Industries in 2008 to create Sumitomo (SHI) Demag, while the Demag name continued as a recognized brand on machines produced at the Schwaig facility.
The Ergotech series became Demag's flagship line of horizontal hydraulic injection molding machines, offered in Compact, Viva, and standard System configurations to cover a broad range of tonnages and production environments. Alongside the Ergotech, Demag developed the El-Exis series — a high-speed hybrid platform combining hydraulic accumulator injection with electric drive technology — available in the El-Exis S and later El-Exis SP variants. The Caliber series addressed large-tonnage hydraulic applications, while the Systec line brought servo-hydraulic efficiency to high-volume production. Across all series, Demag machines are controlled by the well-regarded NC4 and NC5 control systems.
Demag injection molding machines serve a broad cross-section of industries. The Ergotech and El-Exis lines are widely used in automotive parts production, packaging, caps and closures, consumer electronics, medical device manufacturing, and precision technical components. The El-Exis hybrid series in particular became a go-to platform for thin-wall packaging and high-speed closure molding, where cycle time and repeatability are critical.
Buyers actively seek used Demag injection molding machines because of the brand's reputation for robust German engineering, long service life, and strong resale value. Premium European injection molding brands like Demag are known to retain significantly more value on the secondary market than comparable machines from other regions, driven by their precision, reliability, and parts availability. The widespread installed base of Ergotech and El-Exis machines means that replacement components, technical documentation, and qualified service technicians remain readily accessible, making a well-maintained used Demag press a cost-effective path to proven production capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Demag best known for in injection molding?
Demag is best known for its Ergotech series of hydraulic horizontal injection molding machines and the El-Exis hybrid high-speed series, both produced at its facility in Schwaig, Germany. The brand built its reputation on precise German engineering, durable construction, and the NC4 and NC5 control systems that operators find intuitive and reliable.
What industries use Demag injection molding machines?
Demag injection molding machines are widely used in automotive parts manufacturing, packaging, caps and closures, medical device production, consumer electronics, and precision technical components. The El-Exis hybrid series is especially popular in high-speed thin-wall packaging and closure applications where fast cycle times and repeatability are essential.
Are used Demag injection molding machines a good investment?
Used Demag injection molding machines hold their value well compared to many competing brands, thanks to the brand's strong reputation for precision, durability, and parts availability. The large global installed base of Ergotech and El-Exis machines means spare parts and qualified service support remain accessible, helping buyers get productive use from a well-maintained used press for many years.
