About Farrel
Farrel began in 1848 when Almon Farrel and his son Franklin opened a foundry and machine shop in what became Ansonia, Connecticut. The firm built chilled-iron rolls and, from an early order for Henry B. Goodyear, moved into rubber calenders and mills that the Naugatuck Valley rubber trade depended on.
In 1927 Farrel Foundry merged with the holder of Fernley Banbury's mixer patent to form Farrel-Birmingham. The Farrel Corporation name was adopted in 1963, the same year the company introduced the Farrel Continuous Mixer. Later decades added the Compact Processor, the Francis Shaw Intermix, and a focus solely on polymer processing equipment.
In 2010 Farrel joined Harburg-Freudenberger and Pomini in the HF Mixing Group. Farrel Pomini, formed in 2011, concentrates on continuous compounding systems and still operates from One Farrel Boulevard in Ansonia.

Who supports used Farrel mills today?
Farrel Pomini, the HF Mixing Group continuous-mixing unit in Ansonia, Connecticut, is the successor company. Independent rubber-machinery rebuilders also stock rolls, bearings, and drives for older Farrel mills.
What does the roll size on a Farrel mill mean?
The inch size, such as 48 inch, is the working face width of the rolls. It is the main capacity figure buyers compare. Roll diameter and friction ratio are separate and often are not on the seller's paperwork.
Are Farrel mills still used for rubber compounding?
Yes. Plants use them to warm, mix, and sheet rubber compound, often downstream of an internal mixer. A later VFD or stock blender is common and worth confirming in the photos.
What should I inspect on a used Farrel mill?
Roll surface, bearing condition and any stated rebuilds, gearbox noise history, motor nameplate versus the frame casting, and whether the starter and VFD travel with the machine.
