About Harig

United StatesEst. 1937

Harig Products, originally known as Harig Manufacturing Corp., built its reputation in Elgin, Illinois, producing precision surface grinders for the American metalworking industry. The company grew into a significant manufacturer during the mid-twentieth century, at one point producing well over a hundred surface grinders per month. It later operated as a division of Bridgeport Machines under Textron before eventually transitioning to independent operation, with parts and service support continuing through authorized specialists and the Tru Tech Systems network.

The core of the Harig product line is its horizontal-spindle reciprocating surface grinder series. The 612 — a 6-inch by 12-inch table machine — is the model most commonly encountered on the used market and comes in hand-feed, cable-drive, and ballway configurations, with spindle speeds of 3,450 RPM and downfeed graduations as fine as 0.0001 inch. The larger 618 series offers a 6-inch by 18-inch work envelope and is available in manual hand-feed and hydraulic automatic-feed variants, including the 618W with automatic table feed and the EZ Surf CNC version. Both series accept up to an 8-inch diameter grinding wheel and are typically paired with Walker electromagnetic or permanent-magnetic chucks.

Harig surface grinders found their primary market in tool and die making, mold making, precision machining, and general metalworking production. Their compact footprint and high-tolerance capability made them a natural fit for toolrooms, maintenance departments, and light production environments across the automotive, aerospace, and industrial manufacturing sectors. The machines are equally at home grinding steel plates, tooling components, punches, dies, and hardened machine parts to tight flatness and parallelism requirements.

Used Harig surface grinders remain in strong demand decades after production because of their robust cast-iron construction, hardened and ground ways, and the fine tolerances they hold even after years of shop use. Many shops choose to rebuild a worn Harig 612 or 618 rather than replace it, since the mechanical design is straightforward and replacement parts remain available through specialist suppliers. The combination of proven American build quality, a large installed base, and an active support network makes a used Harig surface grinder a cost-effective choice for any precision grinding operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Harig best known for?

Harig is best known for its precision reciprocating surface grinders, particularly the 6x12 Model 612 and the 6x18 Model 618 series. These horizontal-spindle machines became a standard in American toolrooms and tool-and-die shops for their ability to hold very tight tolerances and deliver consistent surface finishes.

Where were Harig surface grinders manufactured?

Harig surface grinders were manufactured in Elgin, Illinois, USA. The company operated there as Harig Products and later as a division of Bridgeport Machines, with parts and technical support eventually transitioning to authorized specialists and the Tru Tech Systems network in Michigan.

Are parts still available for used Harig surface grinders?

Yes, parts and technical support for Harig surface grinders are still available through authorized independent specialists and the Tru Tech Systems network. The mechanical simplicity of the 612 and 618 series means many shops opt to rebuild a worn machine rather than replace it, keeping the total cost of ownership low.
