About Schaudt Mikrosa

GermanyEst. 1878

Schaudt Mikrosa brought together two long-established German grinding machine traditions: the Mikrosa lineage, whose origins trace back to 1878 and which began producing centerless external cylindrical grinding machines at its Leipzig facility in 1949, and Schaudt GmbH, a specialist in cylindrical and non-round grinding. The two companies merged in 1997 to form Schaudt Mikrosa GmbH, operating as a member of the United Grinding Group. Production of new machines was discontinued in 2020, and in 2021 Schaudt Mikrosa GmbH was formally merged into Blohm Jung GmbH, which continues to provide service, spare parts, and rebuilds for the installed base.

The centerless grinding side of the business operated under the Mikrosa name and is defined by the Kronos series — a range of precision centerless grinders offered in S, M, L, and dual configurations to cover workpiece diameters from under 2 mm up to 250 mm. These machines support both throughfeed and infeed (plunge) grinding and are built around a modular platform that allows automation and handling systems to be integrated directly. The Schaudt brand covered external cylindrical and non-round grinding, with the CamGrind series for camshaft grinding, the CrankGrind for crankshaft applications, and the FlexGrind for universal cylindrical work including long, heavy components such as printing rolls and tool spindles.

Schaudt Mikrosa machines were engineered primarily for the global automotive industry and its tier-one and tier-two suppliers, where high-volume, tight-tolerance shaft and roller production is essential. The printing industry was another core end market, particularly for the FlexGrind line. Bearing manufacturers and general precision engineering shops also relied heavily on Kronos centerless grinders for the mass production of cylindrical components.

Buyers seeking used Schaudt Mikrosa grinders are drawn to the brand's reputation for exceptional rigidity, long service life, and the continued availability of spare parts and rebuild support through Blohm Jung and the United Grinding Group. The Kronos centerless grinders in particular hold their value well on the secondary market because of their modular design, Siemens Sinumerik CNC controls, and the depth of the installed base — factors that make sourcing parts and qualified service technicians straightforward compared with many competing brands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Schaudt Mikrosa best known for?

Schaudt Mikrosa is best known for its Kronos series of centerless external cylindrical grinding machines, which became a benchmark for high-volume precision grinding in the automotive and bearing industries. The brand also produced the CamGrind and FlexGrind lines of cylindrical grinders under the Schaudt name, covering camshaft, crankshaft, and general-purpose cylindrical grinding applications.

Are Schaudt Mikrosa machines still supported with parts and service?

Yes. Although Schaudt Mikrosa GmbH ceased new machine production in 2020 and merged into Blohm Jung GmbH in 2021, the United Grinding Group continues to provide spare parts, service, consulting, and machine rebuilds for the entire installed base of Schaudt and Mikrosa machines. Thousands of these grinders remain in active production use worldwide.

What CNC controls are typically found on used Schaudt Mikrosa Kronos grinders?

Most Schaudt Mikrosa Kronos centerless grinders built from the late 1990s onward are equipped with Siemens Sinumerik CNC controls, commonly the Sinumerik 840D. This is a widely supported platform, which makes finding qualified service technicians and replacement control components relatively straightforward on the used market.
