Trane traces its roots to 1885, when Norwegian immigrant James Trane opened a plumbing and pipe-fitting shop in La Crosse, Wisconsin. His son Reuben, a mechanical engineering graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, joined the business, and the two incorporated The Trane Company in 1913. Reuben's invention of the convector radiator in 1923 established the firm as an innovator, and in 1931 Trane patented its first air conditioner. Seven years later the company launched Turbovac, a water chiller that fundamentally altered the industry's approach to large-building cooling. Trane was acquired by American Standard Companies in 1984, then by Ingersoll Rand in 2008, and in 2020 the parent company was renamed Trane Technologies.

Trane's chiller portfolio spans centrifugal, helical-rotary screw, and scroll compressor technologies with capacities from roughly 20 to more than 4,000 tons. The flagship CenTraVac line of water-cooled centrifugal chillers — offered in models such as the CVHE, CVHF, CVHG, and CVHH — has been in continuous production since 1938 and covers roughly 120 to 4,000-plus tons using a low-pressure, direct-drive compressor design. The Series R air-cooled helical rotary screw chillers, including the RTAA and RTAC, cover 70 to 500 tons and have accumulated an installed base of more than 50,000 units worldwide. Trane also produces the Series R water-cooled screw chiller (RTWD) for commercial and industrial buildings in the 80-to-250-ton range.
