About Used Laser Marking & Engraving Machines

Laser marking puts a mark on a surface. It does not cut a part out of a sheet. A galvo head steers a beam across a field, often a few inches on a side, and the mark is an anneal, an etch or a shallow engrave. Beamer is a name that repeats on these markers. A cutting laser, fiber or CO2, is a gantry and a table. A marker is a head, a lens and a small enclosure or a stand. Confusing them is how a shop buys a wattage that cannot cut and cannot mark the field it needed.

Field size comes from the lens. A lens that marks a small, dense code will not cover a large logo in one shot. Power is low compared with a cutter, often tens of watts, because the job is a surface change, not a kerf through plate. Wavelength follows the material. A fiber marker is the usual choice on metals. A CO2 marker is the usual choice on many organics, wood, some plastics and coated surfaces. The source that marks steel may not mark the plastic, and the reverse is just as true.

Fume extraction matters even though the cut is shallow. A mark on a coated part or a plastic still makes smoke, and that smoke lands on the lens. A rotary axis, when the part is round, turns the part under the head. It is an option. A flat plate does not need it. The software and the font or the barcode library are part of running it. A head whose software will not boot is a galvo you cannot aim.

A used laser marking head should be fired on your material, in your lens field. Look at contrast and at the edge of a small character. Check the lens for haze. Confirm wattage, wavelength and whether a rotary or a stand is included. Do not buy it to cut sheet. A cutter's nozzle and assist gas are a different machine. Match the wavelength to the surface you have to identify, then match the field to the largest mark.

How to Choose Used Laser Marking & Engraving Machines

A Mark, Not a Blank

If the goal is a serial, a logo, a code, or a shallow engrave, you are in the right place. If the goal is a part cut out of sheet, you want fiber or CO2. Wattage here is a marking wattage. It will not follow a plate-thickness chart.

Field size is the window. A part that does not fit that window does not fit the machine. Fixtures and, for rounds, a rotary are the rest of the setup.

Material, Contrast, and the File

Metals, coated metals, and plastics take a mark differently. Ask for your material, not a sample tag that photographs well. The smallest character you need is the resolution test.

The control has to open your file. A galvo and a lens in good shape still do nothing if the software is locked or gone. Beamer is the name you will see. The mark on your part is still the specification.

Laser Marking & Engraving Machines Specs to Compare

Job type

This machine identifies a part. Sheet cutting is a different catalog group.

Field size

Typical range: The galvo window, not a 5 by 10 bed

A part outside that window will not be marked in one view.

Source power

Typical range: Low watts, often around a 20 watt class

Marking power is not cutting power. Do not compare it with a fiber kilowatt.

Lens condition

A scarred lens reduces contrast and looks like a weak source.

Rotary

A flat-only marker will not wrap a mark around a cylinder by wishing.

File and control

Hardware without the software is a cabinet. Confirm the file loads.

What to Inspect on Used Laser Marking & Engraving Machines

  • Mark your material

Contrast and focus on your finish matter. A demo tag in a different metal is not your part.

  • Use your smallest character

If the code or the serial is illegible, the lens, the focus, or the file is wrong.

  • Measure the field

The galvo window has to cover the mark. A cutting-bed dimension does not belong in this comparison.

  • Inspect the lens

Pits and haze cut contrast. It is a wear item, and it is cheaper than guessing the source is dead.

  • Open the real file

The control should load the format you use. A locked computer is part of the machine's condition.

  • Try the rotary if you need it

A round part needs the axis to turn and the mark to stay in focus. Do not assume the attachment works.

  • Confirm it does not claim to cut sheet

If you need a blank, stop and open the fiber or CO2 group. This head is for a mark.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does laser marking do if it does not cut sheet?

It changes the surface. A logo, a serial, a code, or a shallow engraving stays on the part, and the part stays in one piece. A fiber or CO2 table is what separates a blank from a sheet, and those groups are the ones with kilowatts and beds. Shopping this group with a thickness chart will send you home with the wrong machine. Field size, contrast on your material, and whether the file opens are the real specs. Beamer is the name you will see on these listings.

What wattage is typical for laser marking rather than cutting?

A low-watt source, often around a twenty-watt class on the machines here, sized to mark or lightly engrave. That number is not a cutting kilowatt and will not pierce plate. More watts in a marker can help speed or a difficult finish, and they still do not turn the head into a sheet cutter. Read the source on the nameplate and then mark your material. If the conversation turns to bed size and assist gas, you have wandered onto a cutting group.

What should I check on the galvo of a laser marking system?

That the beam moves across the field and holds focus at the corners, not only in the center. A tired galvo appears as a stretched character or a mark that fades at the edge of the window. The lens in front of it is the other half, and a scarred lens imitates a weak source. Mark the smallest text you care about. Also open your file on the control. A galvo that dances for a demo and cannot load your format is not ready to put on a bench.

Can laser marking replace a fiber cutting table?

No. Laser marking identifies a part. A fiber table cuts the part out of sheet. They can sit in the same building and they do not replace each other. If someone lists a marker with cutting language, read the wattage and the field size and you will see the difference. Use the fiber group for nests, gas, and bed length. Use this group for a serial or a logo. Buying one because the word laser appears in both titles is how the wrong crate arrives.

How do I tell laser marking from a sheet cutter on a listing?

Look for a galvo head, a small field, and a wattage that would not cut plate. A sheet cutter advertises kilowatts, a bed in feet, and assist gas. A marker advertises a mark, a lens, and sometimes a rotary. Photos of a cabinet with a small window are a clue, and the nameplate is the confirmation. Beamer units here are markers. If the listing is a gantry over a pallet, you are on the wrong group even if the word laser is in the title.

What fume and lens care does laser marking need?

Any mark on plastic or a coated metal makes fume, less than a sheet cutter and still enough to haze a lens and bother a room. A small extractor is part of a serious setup. The lens should be capped when the machine sits and inspected when contrast falls off. Do not jump to a source replacement before you look at that optic. Focus and a clean lens restore a lot of marks that were blamed on power. Your material is the test after the lens is honest.
