About Used Gaylord Tilters
A gaylord tilter tips a gaylord or octabin so pellets keep flowing to one corner where a vacuum wand can finish the box. The frame is a platform, an air bag or a cylinder, and a pivot. It is not a conveyor and it is not a silo. As the box empties, the back rises so the wand is not sucking air from a hollow. A box tilter is the same machine under another shop name. Floor-level frames let a pallet jack roll the box on. NBE's floor-level tilters stage a full container, up to about 2,500 pounds, and keep tipping as weight leaves, up to about 45 degrees. Raised platforms often start the lift later, when the remaining weight is low. The frame does not make vacuum. The loader does.
Capacity has to exceed a full box, not the last hundred pounds. A tilt that finishes near 45 degrees parks pellets at the wand without dumping the box. Air bags rise smoothly as weight leaves. Cylinders are the raised-platform style and they need shop air that is actually dry. A vibrator breaks bridges in regrind. A wand holder sets the pickup height, and a holder at the wrong height is why the loader surges. Safety ratchets exist so the platform cannot fall back on a foot.
The frame sits at the start of the material line, in front of the vacuum loader. Hoppers and surge bins are the next vessel when you are not feeding a wand in the box. A tilter does not replace a loader, and a loader without a tilt leaves a heel in every box. Keep the hose short. A crushed air line or a wet bag is the failure, not the steel platform. National Bulk Equipment and NBE are one maker. The name on the frame may read either way.
Closures leave a used gaylord tilter behind when the silos stay and the press-side boxes go, and consignments add the frames a plant pulled off a line. Inspection starts with the air bag or the cylinders, the pivot and the ratchet, under a real load if you can borrow a box. Note platform size and rated pounds so a light frame is not asked to lift a heavy octabin. Ask whether the wand holder and the vibrator are still on the frame.
How to Choose a Used Gaylord Tilter
How to Size a Gaylord Tilter
Weigh a full box of your heaviest resin, not an empty pallet, and stay under the frame rating with margin. A tilter that will lift the last 400 pounds can still fold under a full gaylord of filled nylon. Platform length and width have to match the box you actually receive. A 40-inch gaylord on a short platform walks off the pivot. Floor-level frames take a pallet jack. Raised frames need a fork or a different dock habit. Tilt angle should finish near 45 degrees so the wand can empty the corner. Shop air has to be there for a pneumatic unit, dry enough that the bag or the cylinder survives the year. Add a vibrator if you run regrind that bridges.
Floor-Level Tilter or Raised Platform
A floor-level gaylord tilter sits flat so a hand truck or pallet jack rolls the box on, and an air bag does the lift. It is the usual press-side choice. A raised platform uses cylinders and often waits until the box is partly empty before it tips, which keeps a heavy load off the pivot at the start. Pick raised when the wand height and the dock already match that frame. Pick floor-level when operators change boxes every hour and you do not want a fork in the aisle. Neither machine conveys. Both of them only aim the box at a vacuum loader. If there is no wand holder, plan to add one or the loader hose will not stay in the corner. A gaylord dumper is another shop name for the same frame.
Gaylord Tilter Specs to Compare
| Spec | Typical range | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Load capacity (lb) | Often about 1,200–2,500 lb | Has to carry a full gaylord of your heaviest resin, not just the heel the wand is chasing. |
| Tilt angle (degrees) | Often finishes near 45 degrees | Enough tip to park pellets at the wand, without throwing the box off the platform onto the floor. |
| Platform size (in) | Length and width have to match the gaylord or the octabin, or the box walks on the pivot. | |
| Lift style | Air bags are the floor-level habit, and air cylinders are the usual raised-platform habit. | |
| Shop air | Pneumatic, often under 80 psi | A tilter with no electric motor still needs dry shop air at the plate, and a wet bag dies early. |
| Wand holder and vibrator | The holder sets pickup height, and a vibrator is what keeps regrind from bridging in the corner of the box. |

What to Inspect on a Used Gaylord Tilter
Lift with a real box
Cycle a loaded platform, because an empty frame hides a bag that will not rise once the gaylord is on it.
Inspect the air bag
Cracks, patches and oil-soaked rubber are a bag that will split, and the platform will stop mid-tilt.
Check cylinders and pivots
Leaking cylinders and a dry, worn pivot stick the tilt or drop it, which is how heels get left in the box.
Test the safety ratchet
The ratchet should hold the platform up until you release it, so the frame cannot fall back on an operator.
Measure the platform
Compare length and width with your gaylord, because a short deck lets a heavy box walk off the pivot.
Look for the wand holder
A missing holder means the vacuum wand will not stay in the corner, and the loader will surge on air.
Run the vibrator
If a vibrator is fitted, it should run on command, or regrind will bridge and the wand will suck a hole.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I size a gaylord tilter for box weight?
Weigh a full gaylord of the heaviest resin you unload, and pick a gaylord tilter rated above that number. The hard moment is the full box, not the last corner the wand is chasing. Match the platform to the box footprint so a pallet jack can land it and the deck does not let it walk. Floor-level frames want a flat roll-on. Raised frames want the lift to start only after some weight is gone. Plan on about a 45 degree finish so pellets reach the wand. Have air nearby.
Floor-level tilter or a raised gaylord tilter?
Floor-level is the air-bag frame that sits on the ground and takes a pallet jack. It is the right gaylord tilter when boxes change often. A raised platform uses cylinders and usually starts the tip once the box is lighter, which spares the pivot at the beginning. Choose it when wand height already matches that deck. Both machines only aim the box. A vacuum loader still has to pull. If operators cannot get a fork to the aisle every hour, do not buy the raised frame and hope.
What should I inspect on a used gaylord tilter?
Put weight on it. An empty gaylord tilter can look straight and still refuse to rise with a box. Inspect the air bag for cracks or the cylinders for leaks, and rock the pivot. The safety ratchet must hold until you release it. Measure the deck against your box. Find the wand holder and run the vibrator if there is one. A missing holder is why the next loader will suck air. Ask the rated pounds and do not guess from the steel thickness. Dry the air first.
Does a gaylord tilter replace a vacuum loader?
No. A gaylord tilter only tips the box so pellets stay at the wand. The vacuum loader makes the vacuum and lifts the resin to the hopper. Without the tilter you can still load, and you will leave a heel in every box and you will surge when the wand sucks a hole. Without the loader the tilter is a platform that holds a box at an angle. Buy them as a pair when the plant is on gaylords. A silo plant may not need the tilter at all.
What air supply does a gaylord tilter need?
Most of these frames are pneumatic. An air bag or a cylinder does the lift, and there is often no electric motor at all. The gaylord tilter wants dry shop air at a modest pressure, the number on its plate, not a soaked line from a compressor with no dryer. Water in the bag is how the rubber fails. A vibrator may be air or a small electric, so read that plate separately. No air drop means the frame sits flat.
Why does a gaylord tilter stall before the box is empty?
The bag or the cylinder is leaking, the regulator is set low, or the wand is not in the corner so weight never actually leaves the platform. A vibrator that does not run lets regrind bridge, and the loader sucks a hole while the gaylord tilter still sees a heavy box. A ratchet that is jammed will also stop the rise. Check air first, then the wand holder height, then the vibrator. A deck that is too small lets the box walk.
