About Myford
Who Myford isMyford began in 1934 when Cecil Moore founded the Myford Engineering Company in Beeston, Nottinghamshire, UK. The company built a reputation on small, precise lathes — the ML series and later the Super 7 — and also produced a line of compact cylindrical grinders. The original company traded until 2011; the Myford name continues today under Myford Ltd, based in Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire, which builds and refurbishes lathes and supplies spares.
What Myford is known forMyford is best known for manual lathes used in model engineering and small-part turning. In grinding, the company made small cylindrical grinders designed for work up to about 12 inches long. The first was the tiny MG9, introduced in 1949 and made until 1954. It was followed by the more successful MG12 in 1953, which went through a long series of developments: the MG12-HA and MG12-HAC with coolant arrangements, the MG12-HAR with rapid wheelhead advance and retraction, the MG12-HP and MG12-HPC with plunge feed, and the automatic-cycle MG12-HPT. Later conventional models were grouped in the "M" series — MG-12M, MG12-ME, MG12-HM, MG12-HPM and MG12-HMR — and CNC versions such as the MG12-CNC were also built.
Model series buyers search forFor used grinding equipment, the MG12 family is the main series to know. Buyers look for the MG12-HA, MG12-HAR, MG12-HPT and the later M-series machines, as well as CNC variants. Because these are small machines, condition and setup matter more than raw size. Confirm the exact model and serial plate before comparing machines, since the same basic grinder was built in many configurations over several decades.
What to check when buying usedInspect the wheelhead and workhead for spindle play, and check the table ways and lubrication system for wear. On automatic-cycle models, test the traverse and plunge cycles, the spark-out timer and the automatic wheelhead retraction. On machines with coolant, check the settling tank or filtration system for condition. Ask for the manual and any maintenance records. For CNC models, verify the control type and that parameters and backup are available. Grinding wheels, belts and seals are consumables, so factor their condition into your assessment.
Service and parts supportMyford Ltd still supports the Myford name from West Yorkshire and lists spares by model, including for the Super 7 and ML lathes. Parts for older grinders are less certain, so check availability of the specific components you may need — spindle bearings, seals, way wipers and electrical parts — before committing. A machine with its manual and a known parts path is easier to keep running.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Myford MG12-HA and the MG12-HPT?
The MG12-HA is a hydraulically operated cylindrical grinder with a simple coolant settling tank. The MG12-HPT is an automatic-cycle machine that combines traverse and plunge grinding with automatic cycles, a spark-out timer and automatic wheelhead retraction. The HPT is the more advanced of the two and allows one operator to attend more than one machine.
What should I check on a used Myford cylindrical grinder?
Check spindle play on the wheelhead and workhead, the condition of the table ways and lubrication, and the coolant tank or filtration system. On automatic models, test the traverse and plunge cycles, the spark-out timer and the wheelhead retraction. Ask for the manual and any service records.
Are spares still available for Myford grinders?
Myford Ltd, based in Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire, continues to support the Myford name and lists spares by model, mainly for the lathes. Spares for older grinders are less certain, so confirm availability of the specific parts you may need before buying.
What size work can a Myford MG12 grinder handle?
The MG12 series was designed for work up to about 12 inches long, which is where the "12" in the model name comes from. The earlier MG9 was smaller, taking work up to about 9 inches. Check the specific machine's capacity plate, as configurations varied over the production run.
Was the Myford MG12 built with CNC?
Yes. Myford built CNC cylindrical grinders, including the MG12-CNC, which has been seen with a Fanuc 21i-T control. If you are considering a CNC model, verify the control type and that parameters and backups are available with the machine.
