Development and manufacturing of the Union line are handled by Waldrich Siegen Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH and Maschinenfabrik Herkules Meuselwitz GmbH, while spare parts, service and modernization for Union boring and milling machines are handled by UNION Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH Chemnitz. The brand's machines are used for high-precision machining of large workpieces, with the largest configurations capable of handling workpieces up to 40 m long, 10 m high and 250 t in weight.

What Union is known forUnion's core product is the horizontal boring and milling machine, offered in table-type, cross-bed and floor-plate designs, plus travelling column milling machines. The current programme is organized into the P/PR series of floor-plate boring mills and the K/KG series in planer design. Controls vary by machine and by any retrofit, with Heidenhain systems such as the TNC 155, TNC 355 and later Heidenhain 530 appearing on machines in the field. Because the BFT range has been built over many years, two machines with the same model number can differ substantially in control, travels and table configuration.

What to check when buying usedStart with the control: identify the exact model and software level, confirm whether it is original or a retrofit, and check that parameters, backups and documentation come with the machine. Ask for spindle hours and running time, and for records of spindle, gearbox and guideway work. On a boring mill, inspect the spindle taper and bore for scoring, check the table and rotary table for wear and backlash, and look at the condition of the ways and way covers. Alignment and geometry should be verified under power, ideally with a test cut or a laser check, since re-scraping or re-aligning a large machine is a significant job.
