How to Choose a Used Large-Tonnage Injection Molding Machine
Start at the mold, not the tons
Large usually means roughly 1,000 tons and up, the presses that run bumpers, bins, pallets, and big housings. Two-platen clamps dominate because a toggle of that size is very long. The mold's projected area and the tie-bar opening decide the press. A 1,500-ton clamp with tie bars the tool cannot pass is useless.
Shot size has to fill a heavy part. A large clamp with a small injection unit is a common used mismatch. Read both nameplates.
The building has to take it
Floor loading, crane height, door size, and the power drop are part of the buy. A press that will not come out of the seller's door in one piece, or will not stand up in yours, is a rigging project you should price before the iron. Oil volume and cooling water scale with the tons.
Robots and conveyors for a large part need reach and a beam that clears the mold. Plan that with the press, not after it lands.
