About Used Two-Platen Injection Molding Machines

Two-platen injection molding machines replace the traditional four-tie-bar toggle design with a compact two-platen clamp, delivering very high clamp force (typically 500 to 4,000+ tons) in a significantly shorter footprint. This makes them the preferred choice for large parts such as automotive bumpers and fascia, pallets, totes, and large industrial components where floor space is at a premium.

Two-platen designs offer uniform clamp force distribution, fast and consistent mold movements, and excellent platen parallelism for large molds. Leading two-platen presses include the Krauss Maffei CX/GX/MX series, Engel Duo, Milacron MMK, and Haitian Jupiter.

When buying a used two-platen injection molding machine, evaluate clamp tonnage, platen dimensions, tie-bar spacing, daylight, and shot capacity to confirm your mold fits. Meadoworks stocks used two-platen presses for large-part molding — contact us at 800-323-0307.

How to Choose a Used Two-Platen Injection Molding Machine

Floor space at high tonnage

A two-platen press clamps with cylinders on the moving platen and locks the tie bars, instead of a long toggle or a third platen. The machine is shorter. That is why large automotive and industrial tools, often from a few hundred tons upward, sit on two-platen frames. Engel Duo-style machines are the pattern people mean.

You still need the shot, the screw, and a tie-bar opening the mold can pass. Shorter does not mean smaller inside.

Against a toggle

A toggle is usually faster at smaller tons and has a long installed base. A two-platen clamp is the large-tool choice when the bay cannot spare the length of a toggle of the same tons. Clamp force is hydraulic. Treat the oil, the lock nuts, and the tie-bar sensors as the maintenance, not as optional extras.

Daylight on these machines is often generous. Confirm it against the mold open and the part, including a robot reach if the beam is low.

Two-Platen Injection Molding Machine Specs to Compare

Clamp (tons)

Typical range: Often about 500 tons and up

Two-platen earns its place on large tools. A small toggle is a simpler machine under a few hundred tons.

Machine length (ft)

The reason to buy this clamp. Compare it to the bay, not only to the tonnage.

Tie-bar spacing (in)

Large molds fail this check more often than they fail the tonnage check.

Shot size (oz)

Big tools need a screw that recovers in the cycle. A small shot unit on a large clamp is a mismatch.

What to Inspect on a Used Two-Platen Injection Molding Machine

  • Watch the tie-bar lock

The nuts or the clamps that grab the bars have to seat every cycle. A slow or uneven lock is the clamp.

  • Check oil at the clamp cylinders

Force is hydraulic. Leaks at the moving platen are the wear.

  • Measure the footprint

Bring the bay length. A two-platen that still does not fit was the wrong reason to choose it.

  • Confirm shot and screw

Large platens get paired with tired injection units in the used market. Read both.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a two-platen injection molding machine?

A two-platen injection molding machine uses a compact two-platen clamping system instead of the traditional toggle and four tie bars, generating high clamp force in a much shorter footprint. Two-platen presses are popular for large-tonnage applications (500–4,000+ tons) like automotive bumpers and pallets.

What are the advantages of a two-platen press?

Two-platen presses save floor space relative to their tonnage, provide uniform clamp force distribution and good platen parallelism for large molds, and offer fast, consistent clamp movements. They are favored for large-part and high-tonnage molding.
